The move could slash your subscription TV costs from as much as $150 a month to just $50 a month – or more than $1000 a year – with little change to the content you are viewing, writes joelgibson | OPINION Money Saving

One of the biggest money saving opportunities available to about one-third of Australian households is to cut your traditional pay satellite TV cable and switch to internet streaming services.

I have had multiple readers ask me to find a way around this issue and, after living in two houses without rooftop antennas over the past year, I have been able to road-test a few solutions. After a few false starts, I finally found one that costs only about $100 and means there is no need for a rooftop antenna. When I asked a local JB Hi-Fi TV expert for their proposed solution, they suggested I try a digital indoor amplified antenna.

I was not close enough to get a good result and picked up only a handful of channels. Thankfully, JB Hi-Fi refunded my money. My smart TV is not old, but it is not new either. This means it does not host the latest versions of some free-to-air TV apps, and it cannot stream live TV – only catch-up TV. The weakness of this plan, or course, is the cost. Smart TVs start at about $300, but they can go as high as $5000-plus.3. Google/Apple TVGoogle and Apple’s latest smart TV devices are called Chromecast with Google TV and Apple TV 4K. They effectively turn your TV into the latest smart TV and toss in a few Google/Apple bonus features, too.

joelgibson Netflix, Amazon Prime, Flash - done!

joelgibson If you want to watch AFL Football you'll have to add Kayo to your list of streaming subs...as Seven don't own the streaming rights.

joelgibson Joel ... I think you need to address the point that many (including me) have payTV to access a wider variety of sport, including all NRL and AFL games. A follow up piece that sets out how I can access this while giving up pay TV would be useful.

joelgibson Can’t you stream free to air anyway. You can’t watch it live except for ABC but does that matter. We had Austar/Foxtel year’s ago and cancelling it was like leaving a cult

joelgibson People .. PAY for that?! Not as a package or “cheaper than without” never connected 🤯 BUT WHY

joelgibson Done it ages ago
