The hours after the Yuendumu police shooting were filled in separate parts by anguish, silence and unrest. Here's what we know about how those hours unfolded.

Some might argue the police's rationale was fair — what could be gained from telling a crowd of a hundred people adjudged to be potentially hostile what we now know? That Kumanjayi Walker had been shot in his own home. That police had fired three bullets, and those same police were now locked away in isolation with the body.

But Eddie Robertson says it was incumbent on police to act honestly and in good faith towards Kumanjayi Walker's family, to adhere to a basic decency. "We were very upset … if they were human beings they would have come and told us what really happened," he said."We went to the police station and sat … peacefully, no protest, we were just sitting there, and all we kept asking the constable was can you come out and let us know if he's safe, if he's alive," said Ms Fernandez Brown.

Whether shutting down communication with the community was part of a by-the-book response to a critical incident or based on the officers' own judgement, NT police have not said.

So far only hearing the narrative from the police/government agencies side. I will wait for the findings of the investigations. I do find it disturbing that the media gets notified of a death before the family. To me thats just inappropriate on so many levels.

someone should apologize to the officer who was stabbed!

The comments on a previous version of this story were ridiculous. People who assume the shooting was based entirely on race without evidence. None of the community seems too keen to explain why the medical staff in town had been evacuated prior to the shooting. Heads in the sand

*Breaking News* A new law called 'Im aboriginal and I deserves special treatment' has just been passed. It states that...'Aboriginals are now legally allowed to stab police officers, if the police officer defends themselves it's murder and/or racism'

What happened happens in suburbia surrounding capital cities far more often. Person out of their mind for whatever cause has obvious weapon & will not drop it then follow instructions from police officer. They then threaten the life of the officer verbally & or then attack. 🤪🗡️

Stabbed a police officer, got shot. Pretty standard stuff. But everyone has their knickers in a twist so let's keep pushing the murder angle.

This story is sad but for medical workers and police working in these outback places it is sometimes very confronting
