The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Andrew Thorburn's resignation just one day after taking on the top job at Essendon Football Club is a 'dark and grave moment in Australian culture”.

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Andrew Thorburn’s resignation just one day after taking on the top job at Essendon Football Club is a “dark and grave moment in Australian culture”.

Former banking boss Andrew Thorburn has accused the media and community leaders of judging him based on his faith. “I think this is a very gravely disturbing moment in the cultural history of Australia Essendon football club has effectively declared itself an anti-Christian organization,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia.“But it’s within the law to sack someone for having traditional Christian religious beliefs.”

Is a resignation for subverting the selection process a sacking? I don’t think so.

He RESIGNED! Thank goodness!

“ dark and grave moment”

Agree 100%

Football is a business, his appointment was a terrible business decision.

Can't believe you can't even be a bigot and hold a position of power over vulnerable young people in this country any more...

Especially since she hasn’t been

You ness as in a dark space for bigots? Yes it is. Good

Greg should stick to foreign affairs

Just sitting back watching Australia tear itself apart.

What is wrong with these people, culture war click bait, dark day in our history, what a mob of tossers and cookers.

I beg to differ. I think it's terrific that we, the people have had enough of out-of-date, non-inclusive religious beliefs and are no longer welcome in our board rooms and political hallways. 👏

so a religious zealot who oversaw large scale extortion of fees etc a NAB thinks he’s being persecuted i’m obviously missing something here

Was Greg Sheridan this concerned when said person was ejected from NAB for his activities uncovered by the banking royal commission? Is crooked how a “Christian” is supposed to behave, Greggie? 🙏🏻

Sounds to me like a win for goodness over bigotry

Homophobia, misogyny and dodgy financial dealings are apparently values to which we should all aspire (as well as recommending yourself for the job you'd been recruiting for).

Greg has no clue what the average Aussie thinks.

Keep goin'..

'Greg Sheridan says' was all I needed to read....next...

Essendon: “You need to choose whether you want the be a bigot, or the CEO of Essendon” Thorburn: “I choose bigotry and I resign” Sky News/ Herald Sun: “Andrew Thorburn was sacked by Dan Andrew’s cancel culture” essendonfc auspol

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What a load of bullshit Sheridan.

How ironic that this person has been ‘cancelled’ because he belongs to a religion that cancels others…

Oh? …because, for perhaps the first time, the discrimination has happened in reverse?!

He’s never watched SkyNews then 🤪

Sheridan is your 'foreign editor'. Who cares what he thinks?

Bullshit!

Really, ha ha ha ha ha, you lot are a bunch of comedians, Essendon should have done the minimum due diligence to find out Thorburn was totally unsuitable due to his responsibilities at ANZ! The other stuff is just BS!

Yet your headline says he was ‘sacked’ - a lie.

Who ever believed Sheridan any way he is a terrific writer of things that may not be quite factual

All the old white conservative fellas are losing their sh*t 'cos they're losing their power. It's delicious.

The only “dark and grave moment in Australian culture” is everything you report Murdoch puppets you are🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

The fuck your feelings crowd sure seems to be full of a lot of feelings.

Which belief was he sacked for? Was it his demonstrated belief that it's ok to rip off customers?

Was. Not. Sacked.

We need far right politicians like Italy now have.. rather than the incompetent ones we have

Click-bait alert! He resigned. Maybe he was given the choice. But the choice he made. He was not sacked. He. Was. Not. Sacked. Hire a journalist. A real one. You’ll be surprised at the difference it makes.

Like Pell’s back office?

Oh FFS.

Utter tripe. Thorburn wasn't forced to resign. Thorburn CHOSE to resign because he refused to abide by AFL inclusivity requirements. Thorburn runs a far right extremist org (under guise of 'church' to avoid taxes) which persecutes women & LGBTQI. No religion involved essendonfc

No shit

No shit

Poor Greg, he used to be a respected reporter, now just piddles out ancient morality.

Murdoch resident bible thumper says what?

Thought experiment: If Thorburn was a Muslim who claimed that his religion required him to have four wives, would Greg Sheridan still be outraged about the sacking?

Greg Sheridan, Foreign Editor ? Essendon is another country .

The Tweet says 'resignation', the header of the article says 'sacked'. Can't be both.

Paging Greg Sheridan & MurdochGutterMedia...

Sky starting a camera to rid the world of bigotry?

MurdochGutterMedia

Your ratings are sht because you keep dishing up this crp & you represent sod all of the community. You're a loss making propaganda machine propped up by Murdoch...

Yes Sky (not) News decent people, people of morals and values do push back against discrimination, so you’re right, it is a dark day for bigots and their enablers.

A dark and grave moment in Australian culture is having anyone with Thorburns disgraceful beliefs leading anything or anyone!! Like that vile former PM Morrison. Hiding behind their Christianity when they are JUST SHAMEFUL BIGOTS!!!

This is what happens when you bowl to the woke queer green society.

What is Greg Sheridan foreign to? Community standards?

Watching conservatives shit their pants over this has been excellent entertainment.

Yes. A breath of fresh air.

🤣🤣🤣

MurdochGutterMedia

I thought he resigned?

How about this headline “shines a light on religions ability to create decisiveness, yet those who believe are completely blind to it”

Eat my ass

Greg Sheridan sees any notion of inclusivity as dark.

Sheridan is a good fit for the Sky drivel merchants.

SkyNews roles out another right wing extremist to write a column defending the resignation of a bigot. Pathetic!

Another SKY Lie

Go tell it on the mountain Greg

Showing his true colours like you lot the genie is truly out of the bottle.

Greg Sheridan give us a fckn spell huh... 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂

It's a great day

Bad forward planning or guilty conscience too.

Wow, looks like Sky finally found something it can use for fill. Just waiting for the Andrew says, Peta says, Paul says, etc to arrive and make the week complete

Greg Sheridan can keep his gob shut, thats my oppinion anyway

When his 'beliefs' are extremist right (or left), good riddance!

He should be at Sky News. Perfectly on brand with your lot.

Sacked for his Bigotry. His faith is irrelevant.

MurdochGutterMedia think it's terrible that a scandal ridden, money grubbing bigot wasn't automatically granted control over a business entity without scrutiny. How dare his apex social position not be pandered to unquestionably! 🤡

MurdochGutterMedia MurdochRoyalCommission

Greg Sheridan? Failed both priesthood and journalism. Wrote that the Whitlam Labor Government was 'overall perhaps the worst government in Australian history'. Now let's talk about Sheridan's contribution to 'Australian culture'?

Christianity isn’t going down without a fight, god bless their little cotton socks.

What a surprise; MurdochGutterMedia shilling for other MurdochGutterMedia. 🙄 ThisisNotJournalism MurdochRoyalCommission

Everybody on the Murdoch feed has the same opinion. Aren’t coincidences fun?

StopHazaraGenocide

No, it’s not. It’s a fantastic day actually. Finally Australians are calling out this bigotry. The day of jobs for the boys - no matter what - is coming to an end. Must be asked why he was even given the job in the first place, a bloody disgrace.

Well Sheridan would say that wouldn't he. He is a fundamentalist Christian who wants religious adherents in positions of power. Australia is a secular country. We do not want religious zealots in senior sporting roles.

Australians are very happy with this decision.

Time to retire Greg

Alienating over half the population.

It’s neither dark or grave. Get a grip, Greg 🤣🤣

Only for bigots, for the rest of us it’s play on.

Double Lol.

He resigned because he couldn’t handle the fact religion was called out for what it is! Fake

The 'foreign editor' delving into wars of a different kind.

He should never have been considered for the position. His character was called into question when as head of NAB he allowed $650 million in fees to be charged to peoples accounts, including dead people which he defended at a Royal Commission into banking.

Geez, Greg. Dramatic much

I'll just continue to say this: STOP TROLLING US!!

No. It’s a shining new dawn. If you are a bigot any respectable organisation doesn’t want you leading it.

A day when hiding your bigotry behind the veil of religion no longer works. A good day! 👍

It's not culture no matter how anyone tries to sway the narrative. It would be hypocritical to preach anti-gay at one venue then host an inclusion function at the club. Anyone with strong anti-gay views would be a poor fit in most clubs. The board failed to consider the club.

Yeah, good ya Greg. Not actually a top quality guy I’d he although Murdoch grifters would probably admire him.

A CEO should be able to represent and role-model the values of the organisation. His resignation is an admission that he couldn't do that. It's a reflection of Thorburn's poor values, not Essendon's.

How do we explain anyone going to Qatar to play in the World Cup?

How did he feel about the drug scandal? His interest in sport is Zero. Grandstander. Toxic in word and deed.

It’s about time Essendon made a correct decision

No it’s a day on which the religious right discovered that they can’t be arseholes without costs

Hyper-religious tendencies haven't been part of Australian culture in quite some time mates

You can have your own beliefs as long as they’re not different to mine.😆

There’s no hate quite like conservative Christian love!

One can readily guess those who will come out and defend Thorburn and there’s one we can tick off.

This one’s got it all! RWNJ Murdoch Stenographers losing their Shit, Pentecostal money loving god botherers, middle age white privilege, reminders of bank crooks and the joke that is EFC! Good times!

'Australian Culture'‽ I hope not.

Really? Where one of the dodgiest bastards in the banking sector was shown the door?

Why the histrionics? Businesses have a responsibility to provide a safe working environment for staff. Having a CEO who's Sunday hobby promotes bigotry, is an avoidable safety risk to staff.

Persecution

Should have said he has converted to Islam he's be welcomed back with open arms

Utter disgrace. Throw the jersey in the garbage

The precedent the resignation of Thorburn sets is really quite disturbing…what happens if a Muslim player wants to go to Essendon? People and the Premier have lost touch with what diversity, acceptance and inclusiveness actually mean!

Of course he does 🤣🤣🤣🤡

It is quite sad to say the least and ironically discriminatory! Other more extreme religious beliefs would not have been challenged due to fear of backlash. Thank the woke-ness momentum. NewAustralia

He resigned!! That's his choice! RWN don't believe in the freedom to choose!!
