Attila Yilmaz was inundated with applications for a job at his Sydney restaurant, but he says there's one group that is among the most desperate for work at the moment.

Clement Demarais never thought he would be relying on his former employees for food, but that's exactly the situation the Melbourne restaurant manager finds himself in.One restaurant owner received 470 job applications, only two from AustraliansHe was stood down from his job in March when the COVID restrictions hit, but unlike his Australian employees he's not entitled to any government help.

But hospitality business leaders argue the industry couldn't function without foreign workers, and the country needs them to stay and be looked after. "I don't want to sound like an old man, but I just don't feel like the youth of today are willing to do the work these foreign workers do," he said. Foreign workers in Victoria can also get the new $1,500 pandemic leave payment if they have to leave work because of COVID or are waiting for a test, and don't have any sick pay or annual leave. It's a bitter pill to swallow."The hospitality industry has such a reliance on foreign nationals to take on roles that generally won't be taken on by Australian citizens or permanent residents.

How does he know only 2 were Australians? I don’t believe this.

Stay at Home Stop the Spread .

The rights of a Citizen are : The right to Vote , the Right to Enrole for War . Mmmm I wonder is going to be the first to go .

Claims for Rates , Claims for Power, Claims Wages and Worker, Claims for Gas, Claims for Phone, Claims GST . Needs a Worker so it can Claim . A Worker to Pay the Tax . So the worker can pay the Tax for their Wage .

Someone has to Pay the Taxs .

No claim for Furl , No claim for Water Mo claim for Power, No claim for Wages, No claim for CEO , No claim for Vehicle , No claim for Phone . Yep , the Lefties have arrived

Get the Form Tick Box corrected .

The difference between a Resident and a Citizen . Tax Form asks do you have the right to Work in Australia . I am a Citizen I am on Holidays .

Melbourne the Locals couldn't live there .

This is propaganda. Nearly all restaurants hire visa workers so they can exploit them by offering a reasonable annual salary then working them for 60 to 70 hours per week. It is rampant in the industry and the lazy employee is a myth hospovoice

Hire Australians first, then look at the others. This is the right thing to do in every regard concerning job situations

This explains a lot. A lot of the temp visa holders are somehow moving to Geelong from Melbourne where there are ‘some’ jobs around and money to be earned. My self employed husband is getting cv’s sent to him too from migrants desperate for some income.

You would think that pride alone would make a business owner want to pay more than the bellow the poverty line dole. If you can’t manage that then you should be on the fucking dole yourself.

1. Interviewee a liar 2. 'Journalist' a liar

Melbourne .

How are people reading this as 'australians are lazy' when its that the government doesn't provide financial support to people on working visas?

MColvinMcKenzie ThisIsNotJournalism. This is straight out of Sky News playbook

Why doesnt he have residency then? 'Mr Demarais is on a highly-skilled migrant sponsored visa. He's worked in Australia for 10 years, paid taxes here for 10 years.....'

I think I saw the interview and he didn't say that he hired the Australians, did he?

Is this the same scam other industries have tried in the past.— Place an ad, when an Australian answers tell him/her the job is filled. Keep doing this to build a false paper proof that you need work visas. Then exploit the foreign worker.I’ve seen it..ABC you are useful idiots.

What sort of red neck trash reporting is this. Shame on you ABC

Dr dunne his family and close friends are still very much in my thoughts and prayers wat an absolute Gentlemen. Justice will prevale .jm p.

Hard to see why this was written at all - an argument constructed on the basis of one lonely example.

Maybe because Australian citizens can get Jobseeker?

You would have to say that hospitality jobs at the moment would not be classed as secure ongoing employment with a very high possiblity of another complete shut down.

Australia has one of the best social security systems in the world. Australians are spoilt.

If I have Jobkeeper or jobseeker and I would not apply a job at restaurant or pick fruits. Some people have abused our welfare system for very long time. COVID 19 made these cheaters even easier.

Great xenophobic headline, harking back to the White Australia Policy days, more click bait rubbish reporting.

The govt allowed back packers ? With work visas etc to stay when Covid was declared a pandemic. I guess they are looking for jobs. Fruit and veg growers are looking for pickers.

Cos they only want to employ non locals as they can exploit n complain to gov that locals do not want to work to further relax the temp visas rules.

And that's about the odds of getting a job 1 in 500 or more

Why would an Australian take a job when they can get jobseeker and sit on their ass?

Is that a problem?

isobelroe I call bullshit

And those 470 where did they come from?

Thats because migrants dont get job seeker

Uno: Who cares? Duo: Did he check nationality or simply judge by skin colour? Tres: Why focus on the nationality question and totally ignore the fact that 470 people applied for jobs? FOUR HUNDRED AND SEVENTY applicants. Racism Unemployment Unemployed

Honestly as a chef, I almost refuse to work with Aussies as they tend to be lazy in hospitality, refuse to clean, rude to a point if ignorance. This isn't all Aussies but enough that I dreaded each one I didn't vet personally.

I work in blue collar recruitment and can confirm that I have had 'applicants' on jobactive who have turned down FIFO jobs ($40-50/hr) because they're happier just stay on Centrelink. They use flimsy excuses like 'I'm afraid of the virus' when WA has little to no cases

What's the point of this Madeleine?

This is doodoo journalism

This is so sad. Lucky it was only two I guess though.

so ... people in a position to prioritise their own health and safety are not applying for shitty jobs in a shitty insecure industry, whereas people who have no other option are? Colour me shocked.

Oddly enough I can see this being true. My sister is a Head chef in a regional town and only people from other places get the jobs in the kitchen as they are the only ones willing to work hard like she does. The other Australian chefs came in either drunk or undermined her.

I got stood down & to get special benefits from CENTRELINK it’s a lost cause !

mackaysuzie What is the definition of Australian

My local cafes and pub can't get workers either. Been advertising for weeks

Get the clicker ready ToomeyWright could be a long day

TheRealPBarry could you please ask ABC reporter Madeleine Morris why this headline?

TheRealPBarry Sir, don't you dare let this one slide!

Funnily enough everyone I know that went on Job seeker, have actually been looking for work. Like legitimately looking. Everyone wants stability. This dole bludger - 'no Aussie is looking for work' schtick was getting old before the pandemic. It's lazy and inaccurate reporting.

So the rest were illegal boat people or something Or aliens!! Damn!

My sons partner is a international student left out by the Federal Government. She is well supported by us but there are many who aren't so lucky.

What are you doing with this headline, ? This type of thing should be beneath you, let alone the story.

Very sad Australia has degenerated to this, our system is frightening for the aged, jobless, under employed, migrants, vulnerable and more.

All foreign workers know the deal when they leave their home nation.. it is no different (generally) for an Aussie abroad..

Is it right or ethical to ask for your “Australianess “? Isn’t just the question ,are you lawfully allowed to work in Australia enough? How does nationality influence the way you boil an egg ?

Yeah, I call bullshit. More propaganda. The ABC reduced to selling the corporate state agenda.

I am surprised there are that many visa holders in Australia. I would have thought they would have all gone home months ago.

0p0l

What the hell is he on about? Idiot

Become permanent resident then

'(The job seeker) has been a very good deal for people who have been broke for a very long time'... So basically what you are saying is that the industry has screwed over workers for years...Everyone knows hospo sucks, and it's not because of the work, it's the pay and hours.

Quick poll, who on their resume states that they are an Australian or not?

Why did ABC post this? Like ABC readers, who are currently unemployed are going to hand in their benefits for a job lol

Indians have always swamped the job market in Melbourne.

Job keeper mate

Der.This has been an obvious result since the initiation of Jobkeeper & the doubling of Jobseeker payments. At least nobody will starve. abcnews auspol

Shame on you ABC. This is click bait

Do you think the importation of a relatively 'low skilled' temporary workforce has helped lead to stagnation of wages and a casualisation of jobs in these areas?

It would seem many people in this thread are either so ignorant of the hiring process or they've never held a job.

'I don't want to sound like an old man, but I just don't feel like the youth of today are willing to do the work these foreign workers do,' he said.... Not willing to work under the same conditions in your utterly perverted and exploitative industry, I think you mean?

... Australian citizens.

or taken away !

Every job application asks if you are an Australian citizen or are on a visa. You need to know you can lawfully employ someone, especially if they have a visa- as visa have work restrictions and hours of work

Everybody knows that migrants work harder. They do the jobs that no one wants to do. Look at a lot of the Uber, couriers, cleanersdishwashers, cooks, etc. they work 2-3 jobs. They live together to save money. Then they buy homes in the outer suburbs. While millennials rent...

Another misleading headline 🙄 All about desperate temporary visa holders that qualify for no government support.

Oh remember the Indian community and other community helped during crisis like bush fire. Feeding meals, well that didn’t stop the Australian mouth to eat saying ÑO they are not Australian but now people in Australia wants to find a job and now they are not Australian.

Fact-check!

Canterbury is a migrant suburb hence why 'Australians' didn't apply. abc you are showing your leftie underwear & it ain't pretty. DefundTheABC lies

Rupert? Is that you

racial discrimination/ ppl can apply for citizenship but it is arbitrarily granted !

Well. That's what happens when further education is gutted. Believe it or not, you can't work in a busy kitchen with just a 3 day barista course provided by your job 'provider'. A Cert 2 in kitchen operations isn't even enough, backed up by 10+ years of experience.

Why is this news? Terrible way of framing this news. Reads like a couriermail article. The real tragic news is that for a casual typically low-paid entry level job 470 people, human beings applied. This is only going to get worse. auspol

On the flip side of that, before covid times, there was systemic wage theft. Those on visas were less likely to alert authorities to this crime

Probably because international cultured people are more hard working

Click bait.

They should definitely be allowed to go home or keep working but it’s right to not fork out payments to everyone

Read the article before commenting

So this restaurant owner asked all 400+ applicants for their nationality?

Rubbish my caring, loving, kind and hard working , sister is currently trying to find a job. She has worked at many power outlets and they will only place people of her skill set on a 12 month contract. 12 old employees out 12 (example) new ones in AusnetEng originenergy

Without knowing Clements situation, he really should have looked at residency then citizenship some time ago... too many let it sit for too long... nail it down.

Can we talk about how the media is so desperately trying to shame people for staying safe at home and waiting for their particular job/place to open again so they can go back to their own work?!

Sorry, simoly do not believe that only 2/470 were Australians. He is aware that people other than caucasians or those born here (disclaimer - I’m both) are Australians in this mult-cultural country - right ?

They chose to stay in Australia, their choice also included not being eligible for social security. The 'student/graduate' visa program should be scaled right back and end the predatory practice setting realistic expectations for foreign nationals.

He doesn't look like the fair work conditions type. 🤔

Migration agent wants more migration Population ponzi abc

Maybe he should pay a living wage that enables any long term life strategy instead of graciously paying scraps .

Or is this because hundreds of thousands are now left out from Jobkeeper

that is what happens when one advertises in hong kong

Could that be because Australians know all about wage theft in the hospitality industry?

Queensland border closure 'gamble' necessary, economist warns as businesses brace for impactThis weekend's sudden Queensland border closure due to the second wave of coronavirus in Australia's southern states sparks mixed reactions among Queenslanders and business owners, from disappointment to relief. We dont want The Trenchs of Bodies . Soon? Sudden? Hardly. Should have happened already, in my opinion. I know, I know, 'The Economy', but people can't spend money if they're dead. In spite of this headline most Queenslanders, including business people, are happy about this because it means most people can keep working. A shutdown here would be a nightmare.
