John Douglas says being wedged inside a small cave, surrounded by 10 enormous Tasmanian cave spiders, was a low point in his career.

Photographing the hundreds of spider species of Tasmania has also put him at the leading edge of spider discovery. As for photographing them, he began that later in life, when he discovered a big range of spiders in his backyard."About the first 50 spiders that I photographed were actually from my own garden," Mr Douglas said. Two decades on, Mr Douglas has accrued a wealth of spider photography experience.

"You look under the bark of trees and you'll find... quite often jumping spiders, huntsmen, sac spiders," Mr Douglas explained. He magnifies spiders using a reversed lens, and achieves fully focused shots thanks to the image-stacking technique and Photoshop. Then there are the wrangling tricks, including catching, handling and positioning spiders, and perhaps surprisingly slowing the active ones down.
