The class of 2021 will get their HSC results on Thursday, but their certificate will not recognise the hardship they overcame to get it | JordsBaker

In late December, Canley Vale High’s graduating year 12 students took their final walk through the playground to the school gates. As tradition dictates, the younger years clapped them out, a sign of respect for their hard work, sacrifice and achievement.

The students of the so-called Local Government Areas of concern suffered more than most. Not only did they have to suddenly revert to remote learning, for which their socio-economic disadvantage left them less equipped, but they also witnessed and in many cases experienced firsthand, the illness and financial struggles in their communities. The class of 2021 will get their HSC results on Thursday, but their certificate will not recognise the hardship they overcame.

The students work hard; they want to do well at school to make their parents proud. “We probably have had more mental health cases this year than we have in the past,” says Ms Santucci.
