Janet Meagher spent a decade of her life locked in an institution, surrounded by monsters.
Ms Meagher, 72, whose most persistent diagnosis has been paranoid schizophrenia, is now a mental health consumer advocate who speaks for those who cannot do so themselves."If you turned up with chest pains – let's hope we don't – to a hospital today, they will at least do some exploratory tests and some investigations," she said.
Ms Meagher said too many facilities relied on medicating inpatients, rather than treating the "whole person".
