Top showbag producers faced disaster this year - then they went online

One of the great Victorian rituals is going to the Royal Melbourne Show every year.

Amy Antonello is one of thousands of people ordering showbags online this year to keep up the tradition for her children Bailey, 7, and Taylor, 5.She remembers seeing the animals, the truck shows and the "overwhelming" music and lights on the rides. She is disappointed the family won't be going this year. The show, due to start on September 19, was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ms Antonello, of Werribee South, bought the Nickelodeon Slime showbag for the boys to share. She bought the Ninja bag for Taylor, which has a plastic mask, swords and daggers, and Hot Wheels for Bailey, including miniature cars, a backpack and a drink bottle."They were really excited. It's a nice surprise, a nice way to remind them that things are sort of normal when they’re not normal.

Samantha Atkinson, retail and product development manager for her family’s 70-year old Melbourne showbag company, Bensons Trading, said the business usually sold up to 500,000 bags at eight stalls at Royal Melbourne Show.

CBA reveals rising full-year profit but coronavirus cracks starting to showThe Commonwealth Bank reports a 12 per cent increase in its full-year net profit to $9.6 billion, boosted by the sale of some businesses, but its underlying earnings are already showing the strain from COVID-19. Is that a slice of cheese? they should be ashamed of themselves for increasing profit in these times.. but evidently, they have no shame. CEO & Executives wages & bonuses should be frozen & low income staff positions should be guaranteed in these difficult times. Shareholders have to accept the fact that their shares will not produce their annual golden egg this year.

Death threats show society must respond to social mediaThat Giants midfielder Callan Ward received death threats as a result of winning a free kick should make us shudder. Not sure why they are threatening players. It is the coaches who have destroyed this once great game. Like watching an Under 9 game with 36 players following the ball. Totally unwatchable.

Sydney Opera House lights up with Lebanese cedar in solidarity with BeirutThe Lebanese cedar has been projected onto the Sydney Opera House to pay tribute to those impacted by the devastating Beirut explosion. 👏👏👏 Nice! Is the cedar of significance to the indigenous Lebanese? Or the non-indigenous Lebanese such as the foreign ethnic Arab, Caucasian, and European settlers and their breeding over the ages? The Australian flag is offensive to us natives forever with the foreign British Union Jack! Gay
