Country NSW is plagued by higher rates of violent crime and assault than Sydney, with a leading criminologist naming alcohol, drugs and youth unemployment as common causes across the state.
Lake Macquarie on the Central Coast had five murders last year from a population of nearly 200,000. Several areas in the Riverina, Central West, New England and the North-West Slopes had a homicide rate 10 times the state average. "No community is crime-free and there are many differences amongst the numbers and types of crimes committed in different areas over time," he said.
Many of these towns had large Indigenous populations battling "the same problems as non-Aboriginal people with unemployment, boredom, frustration and anger", and additional problems stemming from colonisation.
And domestic violence? Isn’t that what Mark Latham has said all along?
Could this be why these country towns cry out for someone to listen? Why parties like One Nation and United Australia Party appear? You can't gerrymander them out of political existence and they've demonstrated that they can an influence and election outcome.
