The downpour broke a drought that plagued local farmers for years. Just before Christmas, truck after truck carted cattle out of town because the scorched earth was no longer suitable for grazing. Publican Ian Simpson has owned the venue since the early 2000s. While the region is prone to flooding, he’s never seen anything like this. “It’s a shitload of rain,” he observes.Windorah’s population is about 100, and it’s the major town in Queensland’s Channel Country, a desert river system that teems with native birds, fish and reptiles after rain.
