Despite climate targets being ramped up, the world is set to increase the production of fossil fuels all the way to 2040 and beyond, producing nearly triple as much as is compatible with stopping global warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Despite climate targets being ramped up, the world is set to increase the production of fossil fuels until 2040 and beyond, according to the United Nations Environment Program.

This discrepancy — the chasm between countries' projected fossil fuel production and the level needed to cap global warming at certain levels — is called the 'production gap'. But actual global production is estimated to reach 35 GtCO2/yr or more by 2040, based on countries' plans and projections. Looking at emissions that way, Australia is the sixth-worst polluter in the world. We are the biggest exporter of coal and the world's second-biggest exporter of liquefied natural gas .

The Covid response showed that it all comes down to political will. They say it's too expensive to transition but when Covid came along suddenly the RBA can create a new $250bill, no worries.

Ears people all die

Why is nobody talking about China's CO2 emissions

Its like trying to blame food companies for being fat, only you can choose what food you buy

leondotcom 'when you take into account the emissions caused by fossil fuels produced onshore and exported overseas' They are not taken into account, the emissions belong to the importers account as with our imported vehicles! who are you to change to rules, shift the goal posts& book keeping?

Going to get worse than ever, politicians can’t be trusted to save the planet

I'd like to know why media always shows steam from cooling towers, didn't know water was a green house gas

When this article says 'the world' it really means about half a dozen countries. The totals are pretty concentrated in the industrialised world and large population nations.

things are not going very well..

This can be a surprise only to those who have not been paying attention. All we have so far is the equivalent of election promises - as Saint John Howard once said, these may be non-core rather than core promises

The LNP and Murdoch are “Greenwashing”. DON’T BE FOOLED!! Their “Net Zero by 2050” is a hoax. Their 'SCAM' has 3 parts: 1 unproven carbon capture 2 a larger role for polluting gas 3 subsidising fossil fuels Vote for science and RealAction, not spin. ThisCantWait

the duplicity of all these pollution reduction numbers being thrown around is so transparent. Anyone with half a brain knows these reduction numbers mean nothing. How about using ethanol for power, it can be manufactured on demand, it burns clean & could run electric generators

Is that why? I thought it was because of the money! Oh blimey!

That's because there is no technology yet for baseload renewables.

Delayerrhea + Denierrhea + Wokeism is why those targets aren't already history.

The incredibly negligent defeatist attitude spread like a plague by the visionless will be overcome by those that push true technological solutions.

Why I learnt to love the Queen and church in a hot minuteWe need some higher powers to help us if Australia is to lift its climate action targets. I bet you did. Yes I have recently only become a bit of a Royalist, I adore the Queen. I never paid any attention to any of them before that didn't really ping my radar. I know you were being satirical but who voted for the Queen to tell Australians what hey should do.
