The US House of Representatives voted on Wednesday to impeach Mr Trump for “high crimes and misdemeanours” and specifically on the charge ofafter he was accused of stoking a mob who forcefully entered Congress on January 6.
This has essentially “charged” Mr Trump with a crime, with the vote setting the “articles of impeachment”. Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell’s office on Wednesday confirmed he will not reconvene the Senate before January 19 so Mr Trump will serve out his term. However, even after Mr Trump leaves office, a conviction in the Senate could lead to a decision to bar him from running again in 2024.
However, an impeachment trial requires two-thirds support so support from 17 Republicans will still be needed to convict Mr Trump. Since 1789, about half of Senate impeachment trials have resulted in conviction and removal from office.
I turned the word impeachment into a drinking game and I’ve been drunk for a week.
More impeachments than terms. So much winning...
