The Palace letters have just blown apart the claim that the Queen played no part in Sir John Kerr's decisions | Jenny Hocking palaceletters

These include Kerr’s concern that prime minister Whitlam might recall him as governor-general, which he discussed with Prince Charles in September 1975 in a profound breach of political and constitutional practice.

Let’s take just one example, from the first glimpse at the letters, Charteris’ letter to Kerr of November 4, 1975, on the reserve powers: "Those powers do exist … but to use them is a heavy responsibility … I think you are playing the “Vice-Regal” hand with skill and wisdom your interest in the situation has been demonstrated and so has your impartiality the fact that you have the powers is recognised but it is also clear that you will only use them in the last resort and then only for...

This is just the first day of viewing these extraordinarily significant letters and there is much still to see and even more to assess. As we delve deeper into them, just as important as what is in the letters will be what isn’t there – the gaps, the events and people who should be but aren’t. Like the then High Court justice Sir Anthony Mason for instance, Kerr’s secret guide and confidante whose role remained secret for 37 years.

palaceletters Republic republic about time .

palaceletters 👇

palaceletters The Palace letters are the biggest non event of all time. QE2 was far less culpable than Barwick, Mason, Fraser, Ellicott, Kerr, Sir Joh, David Smith, Albert Field, Vince Gair and the whole of the LNP etc etc etc.

palaceletters The main thing to come out of this is that Australians are still happy with the Queen as our Head of State I have no doubt if this happened again , it would still be the same, what a shameful cringe worthy nation we still are

caitoz palaceletters lol

palaceletters How am I going to sleep tonight ? Yawn

GDixon1977 palaceletters I don't understand why it's just the letters. How do we know Kerr wasn't in touch with the Queen or her advisors by phone and that she was aware of the dismissal but this left no record?

palaceletters I feel I should be horrified but cmon seriously?!

palaceletters fakenews

palaceletters What’s is she on about? Where is the proof? Sounds like she expected a smoking gun and got absolutely nothing. Sad

caitoz palaceletters The Queen? Isn't she just a powerless figurehead who is worth £2 billion?

palaceletters

palaceletters It was the right decision

palaceletters Who cares?

palaceletters The letters SHOW that Kerr did NOT tell the Queen of HIS decision and she found out AFTER. I know, the truth can be inconvenient!!

palaceletters Kerr was a dirty dirty rat .. he was after sacking Whitlam for his own gain.. he wanted the liberals in.. Whitlam was the best PM for Australia ever ..

palaceletters clickbait

palaceletters Queen does daily what Bondy went to jail for and Skaise went to Spain for, honest legal fact:

palaceletters Rubbish, it's all word salad, as I read it, Kerr was advised to proceed with great caution, he had already put his moves in place. It seems that HM was concerned about the motives being political (which they were), so she was right. She has no power regarding many matters.

palaceletters Ce? The letters show the Queen played NO part in it. She was just being kept informed, as you would expect. She offered NO advice at all!

palaceletters “bombshell” 🤦🏼‍♂️

palaceletters can't your journalists read? Or do they just run with the first thing said and hope others can't read?

palaceletters Sorry but Liz, it's bloody time Australia became a republic asap. You failed to ensure the GG did not interfere in the Political decisions of Australia nor did you make the PM aware of concerns. What a bloody mess. Republic now.

palaceletters

palaceletters And that her unelected private secretary had such a huge role in our domestic politics. That the monarch is neither elected or selected on Merit is one thing but for her duties to be delegated to some underling is a disgrace.

palaceletters Treacherous!

palaceletters Hocking has been shown up to be the wacky conspiracy theorist she always was. Nothing to see here. Case Closed.

palaceletters There is no smoking gun in the papers. Gough was dismissed, an election was called. The voters then validated the decision of the GG

palaceletters The UK queen and her little distant colony? It's like a story of the 19th century!!!! When does a real democratic republic and a president in Australia?

palaceletters 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' seems an appropriate lesson here. The letters confirm the researcher's bias because 'confirmation bias' is what she is after

palaceletters Clutching at straws. Whitlam was legitimately dismissed. MOVE ON!

palaceletters Rusted on ALP voters will never accept the fact that Whitlam was dismissed by an Australian... indeed a former member of the ALP who was expected to be a placeman that merely did what he was told. He didn’t, he acted to protect the interests of the country against a megalomaniac!

palaceletters Typical crappy leftie article by the Herald.

palaceletters 😂

p_hannam palaceletters Wow. That's a complete shift from earlier readings that Kerr acted without the Queen's knowledge.

palaceletters Bollocks 🙄

palaceletters This article is complete rubbish. The letters show pretty much the opposite. With a book no doubt in the wings, Jenny Hocking desperately trying to breath life into a story that largely isn’t there.

palaceletters No letters show no question or any contrary evidence, Kerr entirely justified his decision following/relying upon “opinions” secretly, and unconstitutionally, sought/accepted from partisan Tories Barwick, Mason, Fraser, Elliott, Shand, et al. Ignoring PM/AG Constitutional advice

palaceletters What a rubbish article. The papers released have actually said the opposite, that it was kept from the Queen. Sounds like the author is trying to rewrite them to fit her book.

palaceletters Letters in fact show Palace was not involved in the decision and demonstrate Kerr acted in the National interest.

palaceletters ElizabethUKRPG ...what say you your Majesty?

'Palace letters' reveal Sir John Kerr sacked Gough Whitlam before telling the QueenA first look at the newly released 'Palace letters' reveals then governor-general Sir John Kerr dismissed the Whitlam government before telling the Queen, because 'it was better for Her Majesty not to know'. how disappointing for you. But he gave her plenty of notice that he was considering it. We have known this for nearly 50 years. The only doubt was raised by the dumb insistence of the Left to promote, on no basis whatsoever, that the Queen directly approved/ordered the Dismissal. And no accountability for this 50 years of irresponsible BS?
