Researchers set out to prove the theory that girls did worse in standardised tests if their parents came from cultures where women had less access to high school. They succeeded, but also made an unexpected finding.

Students whose parents migrated from countries where gender is a barrier to high school education struggle more in tests than those arriving from countries with gender equality - and the problem is worse among boys than girls.

"The effect is just as strong for boys - in fact, stronger," said lead author, Associate Professor Mike Dockery. "We were not expecting to find that cultural effect for boys."Many countries have equal access to high school for boys and girls. But in countries such as Somalia, South Sudan and Afghanistan, girls have half as much access as boys, Dr Dockery said.

"The results provide evidence that the effect of cultural background is passed on by gender role models and norms within the family, which in turn effect academic performance."
