There is an undeniable modern complexity to fire in this country – a situation to which we must all adjust | KonradMarshall

– adding and multiplying the devastating data – will take months, years. Until that cruel calculus is counted and considered, imagery can tell the stories. I spoke to a few of the frontline photographers featured in this issue ofwas on hand for the naval evacuation of Mallacoota on the eastern tip of Victoria in early January.

“There was this sense that summertime isn’t going to be that same carefree long stretch at the beach anymore."The other reckoning thrown into perspective for McManus was the immediately transformed nature of summer. He met holidaymakers everywhere who were determined to help with the recovery process. They’d been drawn to the same leisure spot every year, and felt as much ownership of the place as the locals. They wanted to stay and spend and support the rebuild.

“We could only save ourselves as the buildings burnt,” says Nick Moir, who documented the destruction in December in Bilpin, NSW, near where he grew up.That worst moment, though, was also – oddly – one of his best. “That was my moment of most pride actually, watching the professionals do their stuff,” Moir says, setting the scene. “We’re getting hit. We can barely breathe. It’s gone from bright sunlight to pitch black. Visibility is two metres.

Similarly, I wrote newsletter items about dozens of obscure studies – into firefighter fatigue, bushfire curricula in country primary schools, building codes at the rural urban interface, and community groups vulnerable to fire danger. These incremental advances in often arcane fields ultimately coalesce into something meaningful. They help people fight and flee the flames.

Prescribed burning, Thornton tells me, is an important part of the firefighting mix. We probably need to do more, he adds. But exactly where – and in what form – is far less certain. Many of the areas that this summer’s fires have burnt through were only recently subject to prescribed burns. And agencies on the ground, says Thornton, suggest that pre-burning of those areas not only failed to stop the new fires, it didn’t even slow them down.
