Opinion: As Trump’s America shows, a system that restricts genuine education to the wealthy elite must eventually drown in its own ignorance. Educating the educable is about the culture we make. It is our best defence against world collapse

The fees, though, stand. Why might students be prepared to keep paying tens or even hundreds of thousands for an education that, like candy floss, disappears before you swallow it?

Because of the ticket. Because, explains Silicon Valley guru and New York University marketing academic Scott Galloway, content is irrelevant. It’s “not education. It’s credentialing”.,” says Galloway. “We charge $7000 per student. That’s $1.2 million for 12 nights of me in a classroom – $100,000 a night. The gross margins on that offering are between 92 and 96 [percentage] points.

The world has changed. Futurists such as Umair Haque are paid about a quarter of our average and their institutions will survive COVID relatively unscarred. But there’s also this. What’s wrong with a little modesty? Does anyone really need the huge status, the expensive toys, the win-at-all-costs mentality? Maybe a smaller, gentler life and smaller, more real institutions could bring back a world that’s nice to inhabit. Calling to the revolution: will you be long?

Universities are for learning and people who want to excel in certain fields, not bullshit degrees that people spend 12 years on the public purse and never repay the Hecs fees or get a real job.

Yes, each child ought to have equal assistance & access to education, where their natural talents can shine and where they can achieve their personal best in life, reach their potential. Society ought to assist each member of society to reach individual & collective potential.

We can not afford a free education for current numbers. If we are to create a system of free tertiary education, this must be restricted to those who genuinely deserve it. So many current university students simply don’t have the credentials to be there.

Any mention of The children of say “The Real Housewives of Sydney” they are the type of scum that should be exposed and held to account, but that would cause disruption to your Front Page CBD section if it exposed the children of the Wealthy for the sins of their Parents👔🏦

Any mention of wealthy elite celebrity hypocrites who pay their way into American collages for their bastardised offsprings from their 3rd or 4th marriage🤷🏽‍♂️This was exposed long ago but only relevant to reporting now. Take a look at these Private Collages in Wealthy syd suburbs🇦🇺

Wtf.

Agree, money has corrupted Australia’s universities. There is real pressure to pass students who lack basic English language skills but do not lack the money to pay full o/s fees. Nothing would reform the system better than a few years without the cash cows.

Trump is our best defense against world collapse and he is winning...which is why you're panicking.

We used to have FREE education...we should bring it back. IQ levels of the average Australian has been dropping ever since John Howard ! Zombivirus TDS

Because Australia copies the US we have been dumbed down too. The older generation better educated than younger.

Same in Australia.

Bring back The Commonwealth Scholarship. Bring back Teaching . Bring back the Bachelors of Arts and Sciences. Value education.

Trump or no Trump what on earth has he got to do with these problems? What do current Australian politicians have to do with similar problems in Australian universities? These problems have existed for decades, it’s got nothing to do with ‘Trump’s America’ this is misinformation.

they have lost the plot as they r addicted to fees of foreign students to build mini empires like new wings n labs They paid excessive agents' fee Agents r preying on people like smugglers Backdoor PR visa Disgraceful Many agents in Melb/Syd got rich fr migration agent/edu

This is strongly represented at Swinburne as they do not abide by VIT policy which means each year they gain more money from their student's by not graduating them.

Agreed. I am dismayed by the degrees for cash syndrome in Aust universities. If I had my way I would lower international student intake (perhaps by hugely increasing fees) and provide free for Aust citizens. auspol

We are broken as a nation. We need to fix the WHOLE system. Nobody has tried to fix it and instead evil people further twisted our system into something really ugly.

Free education for Uni

Education, a public good, must be accessible to all and as such it has to be free. A civil society should not only encourage learning but celebrate it. Without such an approach we are doomed to slide back into the swamp of ignorance, fear and hatred.

Trump Derangement Syndrome much? you hid it So well

As long as they think like you.

Education should be free

These democrat run states seem to have so much trouble.
