Editorial: No one wants to see Australia follow the US where the bickering between states and the federal government has resulted in contradictory advice and wasted resources, undermining faith in public health authorities

Hailed as cohesive and productive during the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, the national cabinet has been struggling to retain the co-operative working relationship more recently – especially since Victoria’s dangerous second wave took hold.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the same point indirectly this week by singling out the system of contact tracing in NSW for praise without mentioning Victoria. For his part, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has repeatedly stressed that the aged care facilities where most deaths have occurred are a federal responsibility and not his. He added pointedly that he would not want his mother, who is in her mid-70s, to live in some of them.

Perhaps, rather than holding separate press conferences, Mr Andrews and Mr Morrison, or Health Minister Greg Hunt, should occasionally appear together to show their unity of purpose.

Scumo stirs the pot behind the scenes.

So says the “leader” sewing disharmony and dissent across the nation, Andrews first, then McGowan, with an occasional sideswipe at Gladys and Anastasia on the way - a marketing ‘mini me’ trying to out trump Donald - anything to keep minds off the ‘Covid Maru’ 600 in Sydney.

ScottMorrisonMP well listen to the advice and close borders and lockdown NSW - we have resources , people, we don’t need the world for a while - lockdown!! Stop deaths

It sounds good, had the Royal Commission into the Aged Care. What did we learn from it? NOTHING!

We do hope Australian Trumpism pollies at least have this decency and sanity in this matter.

bencubby We’re emulating some of the biggest US pandemic failures. Let’s emulate NZ or if it’s too late for that, Vietnam. And stop blocking repatriation flights. The caps are undermining the few airlines still flying. IStillCallAustraliaHome MarisePayne I give up, SenatorWong please

Spot on. Sadly we’re heading in that direction.

If Australia has become a province of China, that would be a shame to Australia!

We need a PM...cause what we have is not that...

Scumbo should just shut up, stop trying to influence WA, NSW and QLD, keep the funds flowing and let them get on with it

A bit late

Victorians had the hardest lockdown. They had the BLM protest whilst businesses were folding. This led to complacency and resentment - viola, Victorians have infected the entire nation because they’ve got idiots in government.

LyndaFrench19 Bickering is from federal and state LNP while the state premiers, especially IStandWithDan are getting on with it.

Tell that to the LNPfail LiberalAus liars. ScottMorrisonMP JoshFrydenberg GregHuntMP and, of course, the corrupt and vampiric PeterDutton_MP are terrified of being held to account - so they have started the BlameGame. Sadly they can only blame AustralianLabor Premiers.

Scomo is Trump’s puppet! Not surprising at all!

Why didn’t Australia learn from Italy? It was the first western country to properly lockdown - all at once! By the way there’s still a few 1000 expats trying to come home IStillCallAustraliaHome

Why wasn't this editorial put out much earlier when the Federal Government were downplaying things and wanted everything open? Now there's genuine heat on them for their Federal Aaged care failings and the responsible minister in hiding, we get the 'no blame, no bickering' takes

Scummo & Co were the ones pushing the states to open before they ought to have. The one-eyed pettiness of state premiers is neither mature nor helpful but expected since it’s who they are generally. If we’re sliding backwards, the bulk of pollies & deniers are dragging us there.

To late

This politicised Federal government deserve no respect:

Fed Govt blamed NSW Health for Ruby Princess. Fed Govt joining with Palmer to take WA Govt to court to force them open. Fed Govt daily bagging of Andrews even tho they are responsible for poor aged care facilities. Fed Govt hammering Qld for closing borders. Common theme?

and on this theme, there needs to be consistency Federal & States e.g. of messaging for wearing Masks to reduce COVID19 community transmission with evidence clear for their effectiveness - this article in today's (30/7) australian about virus spread reinforces their importance

Then don’t turn on the TV.

Scotty follows US model blindly. They have money to waste Australia doesn't.

Maybe tell ScottMorrisonMP and CliveFPalmer to shush then.

Wow that’s the best you can do? Sad will be looking at your advertising and avoid. Thanks

ScottMorrisonMP is placing the nation’s health in second place to the economy. WA is proof that if you focus on health the economy takes care of itself.

National response?

Only Victoria.

ItsAboutControl Who cares who gets the flu? You are 35 million people. You count the cases, not the death rate. Not once in my life has the media counted the number of flu deaths. California - 40 million people, and 8000 + deaths. That is a low death rate compared to 32,000 dead in NY. Sorry, talk of outbreaks, clusters is BS. Coronavirus is all over. Test not laser-targeted. Oft gives positive for common cold. Case rise is result of testing blitz in certain areas. And why just restaurants, pubs etc not woke demos, train stations?
