From next week, Tasmanians aged 18 and over will only have to wait three months for a COVID-19 booster shot, meaning another 66,000 people will become eligible.

But the government said there were still close to 60,000 people aged 50 and over who had not had the third vaccine dose.

"We've seen from the experience in other countries and across the world that the booster is the best way to strengthen your immunity and continue protecting yourself, your family and community," Mr Rockliff said. "I want to encourage all Tasmanians to check when they had their second dose of a vaccine and when that three-month milestone arrives, I urge them to please book a booster."

About 5 million Australians have received their booster, with New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT already
