Victoria’s next step of the road map to reopening has been brought forward to this Friday, but there’s no need feel anxious about the quicker timeline | OPINION by epidemiologist Catherine Bennett

As Melburnians weathered unseasonably chilly conditions while contemplating which of the few new freedoms to exercise, we were greeted with the news that we will only have to navigate these interim rules for one week.

More controversially, one rule was brought forward from the 80 per cent step on the road map – allowing up to 10 visitors in the home. School reopening was also brought forward compared with the original plan, and we now look forward to all students being back in the classroom from this Friday. Work has been underway for some time now to prepare the school physical environment with improved ventilation, but we are yet to hear results ofNational Centre for Immunisation Research study of transmission of the Delta variant

The vaccination gateway to the final step on the Victorian road map has also been made more ambitious now with the vaccine target for all Victorians 12 years or older lifted to 90 per cent from 80. This might have seemed nigh on impossible a month ago when the road map first appeared, however there has been strong interest and 77.5 per cent of those 12 to 14 now have at least one dose, even though we are only a few weeks into the rollout.

I love Catherine's advice. I remember Dr Chant saying dont open the borders too soon there are new variants. I could always count on Bennett and Coatsworth

If she can't get basic maths right I don't really think the rest of her advice is worth listening to.

A 'quicker timeline' because the vaccine will soon be out of date. Its only effective for several months anyway + being fully vaccinated is meaningless because the second jab is also out of date... thus there is no end date to the vaccination rules + the third jab is on the way

So what happens to all the record Covid cases in the community. What just drift away. No idea what they are doing. It was all guesswork from Day 1.

Sinister effort to blame Victorians for his own failure to keep cases low sicko Dan Andrews says discrimination is totally fine against more than 25% of Victorians yet to be vaccinated. Even the experts acknowledge Daniel Andrews’ untenable position. covid19vic melbournereopens

You might want to double check the math...
