Australians are willing to vote for a republic by a narrow majority of 54 per cent but are split over the best way to choose the head of state to replace Queen Elizabeth after calls this month for a new model to elect the leader in a popular vote.
Support is also low for legislating an Indigenous voice to Parliament in the constitution, a proposal backed by Labor but rejected by Prime Minister Scott Morrison in favour of a plan to legislate a new structure to give First Nations people a say on key policies. The survey found 54 per cent said “yes” to a question that asked: “Even if it’s just a slight leaning or a guess right now, would you vote yes or no to Australia becoming a republic?”With advocates for a republic divided over how to choose the head of state, the ARM put forward a proposal earlier this month to give voters the final choice from a shortlist of candidates put forward by federal, state and territory legislatures.
Now Australia is crammed with so many foreigners and has lost its identity I would not be surprised.
