It’s an essential aisle of supermarkets in the UK that customers love and yet it’s almost entirely absent in Woolies and Coles – and there’s a good reason why.

It’s the supermarket staple that Australia never got on-board with.A middle aisle that cuts across the others.Source:News Limited

It occurs in Australia too. Woolies has them in stores in Leichhardt and Baulkham Hills in Sydney. ManyBut it’s rare, very rare. The standard for Aussie supermarkets is narrow aisles, with two metre high shelves either side that stretch up to 30 metres into the distance with no break.Source:SuppliedThe University of South Australia’s Dr Bill Page has analysed how customers shop in Australian supermarkets with and without these central aisles.

So, almost subconsciously, people instead duck into and then U-turn out of narrow aisles once they’ve got what they need. “A store which is faster for shoppers to navigate may not only reduce their time but their levels of angst resulting in more satisfied, and profitable, shoppers,” he said. Indeed, the angst levels of some shoppers actually went up in aisle break stores, Dr Page told news.com.au.

“It may be that shoppers have an internal promotional budget which is spread out across the store and when they spend this budget they disregard or ignore the aisle ends,” Dr Page said.

Pretty sure we’ve gone ok without it. It is in some of the bigger stores, but again, it’s not holding us back... now IKEA? That needs a quicker way out!

Dumbest post of the day

Coles at Morrisset NSW have the aisle cutting at 90*. Not that rare.

Both my local Coles and WW here on the GC have these....is this a thing?

Tescos and sainsbury supermarkets are bigger than ours and house more sections like pharmacies and alcohol in the one layout. They need the break in the middle of the store for various reasons. Out supermarkets aren't as big so don't require it

This is so dumb. Plenty of Coles are set out that way.

Big change to Woolies bagsSupermarket chain Woolworths has begun making its paper shopping bags in Australia, a plan it had in place before customers voiced outrage about the company sourcing bags in China. Not a big change at all, just a change to local manufacturing of paper bags. I can recall, in the 70s, groceries being packed into paper bags at the supermarket. So if it took 40+ years for humans to correct the mistake that was plastic bags, what chance have we got when it comes to global warming. NONE Hey woolworths how about you ensure your stores have clean trolleys available for your customers that don’t have filthy masks left in them when collected from the car park...
