Car parks, bowling greens and streets could become the latest settings for restaurants and beer gardens as the NSW government and City of Sydney look at ways to pedestrianise the cityscape and revive the hospitality industry | AngusGthompson smh_andrew

NSW Planning Minister Rob Stokes declared the government was “throwing out the planning rule book and taking emergency measures” as senior government figures and councils try to revive the decimated hospitality sector, with an expansion of last year’s al fresco reforms to larger outdoor areas a priority.

“The sweet life in Sydney – across NSW - is all about the outdoors. The time is coming to pack away the COVID doona and embrace our summer of freedom.” Mr Stokes, who was instrumental in broadening the use of public spaces during the pandemic, said the government needed to now make it as easy as possible for venues to serve customers outside: “We’re blessed with a beautiful climate, and spectacular places and open spaces around NSW. So, when lockdown eases, let’s move indoors outdoors, raise a glass and enjoy summer after a rough winter.

Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore said: “We’re giving a new lease of life to forgotten spaces in the centre of Sydney to welcome people back into the city when it’s safe to do so, and support local businesses that have been devastated by the ongoing pandemic.” The Rocks was the first area in Sydney to trial the relaxation of rules around outdoor eating and drinking.Mr Dominello said he wanted councils across NSW to partner with the government “and be bold in their thinking and their ideas.”

Andrew Fineran, owner of Batch Brewing in Marrickville, said he plans to set up tables on the footpath and a nearby car park.
