Student activist Drew Pavlou, who has been criticial of the University of Queensland's links to Chinese Government organisations, says he has been suspended by the university for two years after a misconduct hearing.

In a statement, UQ's Chancellor Peter Varghese said he was advised of the outcome of the disciplinary action today.

"There are aspects of the findings and the severity of the penalty which personally concern me," he said. "In consultation with the Vice-Chancellor, who has played no role in this disciplinary process, I have decided to convene an out-of-session meeting of UQ's senate next week to discuss the matter."

UQ has maintained the disciplinary hearing was not in relation to Mr Pavlou's criticism of the university's relationship with China. Mr Pavlou, who is also a student-elected member of the university's senate, has told the ABC the two-year suspension was in place until his position on the senate expires.

Good Job!

UoQ another Australian university kowtowing to the Chinese Communist Party line - they know whose paying the top brass salaries

Freedom speech for the SA Police as well

Freedom of speech more like inciting riot for personal brand building.

The headline is completely misleading. He was suspended for repeated code of conduct violations.

University of Queensland definitely cares about money more than free speech

Dysorexia a paranormal disorder is traceable. XHNews mustn't disregard ongoing internal parapsychological dysaesthesia within HongKongFP. A scientific response to this historied epidemy sweeping over global health. Requires a greater medical diagnosis not military subversive

America freedom for speech is speech on other countries that they know only shit of, but they dare not speak anything that the TWO parties are both not happy with. reasons are vary. medias need money support from them, normal people don't even know Africa is not a country

China has been stealthily and insidiously buying all western unis, academics, big business, politicians ....

I don’t wanna see that fat face again 🤢

Come on UQ academics, show us that all the money invested in your security of employment was not wasted. Make use of your tenure to publicly support Mr Pavlou’s exercise of free speech on campus. Even if you are too timid to StandWithHongKong , you can stand with Mr Pavlou.

Remember.... it's only cool to protest imaginary fascist and oppression at uni. Because apparently the real ones fund it.

The two flags on left and right are for a cult banned in China in 1999. The name is the Great Law of the Wheel of Dharma. The leader claims he is larger than buddha. How i know? I read his book in 1995. Lots of activists and adds on youtube were from this cult.

All the people in the background is $300 / day! Good pay, cash, LOL

Can someone please ask why the IPA and LNP backers are paying Drew Pavlou’s legal bills? auspol

Worry about this brave young king. The university might kidnap him and send him to China

Something to hide when a student activist gets suspended

Why were there so many cult members in the background?

A young man who were accidentally forced to become a social/political activist. Keep going mate!

Funny watching all the university hating right-wingers who constantly whine about our unis being socialist recruitment grounds are suddenly behind an activist...

Wow, he joined Falungong? must been well paid by the anti-China evil organisation.

Chairmansland maybe

Trust the evil left to silence a young man with a different opinion

Chinese power at work again. Boycott all Chinese products wherever you can.

In a way it proves his accusations by way of their actions.

Why he does not support the independence of Catalonia and California? Why does he support Hong Kong independence but not go to Hong Kong? This guy is just a show guy like Trump ! It's a waste of our public resources !

You would not be a political tool if you have ever mentioned those violent things done by Hongkong protesters. However, you haven't.

A dark day for academia in Australia. When the demands of a communist dictatorship like the CCP are valued higher than debate on campus.

There should be an investigation of financial ties between staff at UQ and the Chinese govt. UQ sounds rotten to the core.

abc, write what he did, how he did it, the ramifications of his actions, what he and others said, explain on what actual grounds the university suspended him. christ, do your job. this article and its headline will ONLY engage people in a pointless, unedifying internet argument.

University is my least favourite institution

Chinese university minions were upset.

Democracy? I guess it is Queensland.... you did vote for Pauline and Dutton.

Australia’s democracy being shut down by the institutions that encourage free thought, free speech and critical thinking. How much influence has the ConfuciousAcademy had in this decision through UniversityOfQueensland?

In order to find a sense of presence, a small country that has always been against China, yes it's Australia, and fake news ABC.

The question is not what he has done, but how he did it

Uni $$$ & the CCP seems to be more important than the right to question on campus these days. Thought crime in academia defeats the purpose.

Maybe spend your time learning not whining

'Sinister intentions': China ups stakes in Belt and Road stoush with Dutton attackThe Chinese government has lashed out at Australian critics of its Belt and Road infrastructure deal with the state of Victoria with a fresh attack on a senior Morrison government minister. billbirtles If China introduces its draconian regulations over Hong Kong what respect would they show Victoria to achieve its own ends. billbirtles 'Sinister intentions' and 'Belt and Road' in the same sentence looks about right to me. Instead of criticising Dutton, China should maybe ask advice from this sage of social order on how Hong Kong could deal with protestors, eg cutting welfare payments and imposing mandatory jail sentences for protestors who disrupt traffic.
