Ashleigh Barty has been on court for a touch over five hours in five matches to reach the Australian Open semi-finals. But her coach believes the world No.1’s game can reach an even higher level.

Two-time major winner Barty hasn’t dropped a set in making the final four. Not only has her serve rarely looked threatened, but the 25-year-old has been breaking her opponent’s with remarkable regularity.“I don’t feel like she’s played her best tennis here yet,” said coach Craig Tyzzer, a mainstay in Barty’s career since she returned to tennis in 2016.

Tyzzer described the hard-hitting Keys, a former junior rival of Barty who, aged 26, is in the same age bracket, as a “powerful athlete” with a “powerful game”.Coach and player hit the road last year in a lengthy stint that culminated in her famous Wimbledon victory – a result that solidified Barty’s standing as the undisputed top women’s player. Her streak of nine wins to start 2022 is adding to the body of evidence.

In reaching the semis in Melbourne, Barty has matched her best Australian Open finish in 2020. It was two years ago, it must be acknowledged, that Barty slipped up at critical stages to lose to eventual champion Sofia Kenin.“Not in this campaign,” he said.“We’ve done that last time, addressed it when things happened last time. I think we’ve moved on from that and I think that shows in the way Ash is going about things as well, what she’s done through last year as well as so far this year.

“I think she played [Camila] Giorgi [in the third round], who hits the ball a million miles an hour and was able to absorb that pace and do something with it,” Tyzzer said.
