Steve Smith achieved a feat that eluded even Don Bradman but it was not enough to rescue Australia after another substandard batting performance.

This was supposed to be the day Australia drove home their advantage after sending England in but instead they find themselves in deep trouble.

Smith's 80 was his 10th consecutive score of 50 or more against England, the most by a batsman against any nation, breaking the record of nine by former Pakistan star Inzamam-ul-Haq. The day finished in frustrating fashion for Australia with Marcus Harris dropping a straightforward chance at gully from Joe Denly, and Rory Burns overturning an lbw verdict in the final over of the day from Josh Hazlewood.

Archer, with his speed back up above 144 km/h, ran through the top and the tail with Curran curving and swerving in between.Warner's run of outs continued but this time it was not his bogey man Stuart Broad who brought his demise. The opener was out to a contentious call from the video umpire Ruchia Palliyaguruge, who needed conclusive evidence to overturn Marais Erasmus's on-field call of not out.

After an encouraging summer at home, Harris has been no match for the high-class pairing of Broad and Archer with only 49 runs from five knocks. He needs a strong start to the Shield season to stay in the XI.

England poached Archer and now Australia must entice Kohli to migrate

Apart from Smith and Labuschagne, our batting lineup is horrendous. The worst I’ve seen in a long long time. These guys have absolutely no idea how to score. Warner....are you serious? It’s a wonder how we retained these ashes.

he's great -- the rest of the batsmen are bloody awful and should never tour England again

Once a cheat....
