'This bit of dirt is sacred to us': Hundreds of speed racing fans have staged an emotional rally as they face the prospect of losing their beloved Sydney Speedway in Granville

that they lay in the path of progress, as the government proceeds with its vision to transform Sydney with single-deck driverless trains.On Tuesday night Speedway announcer Wade Aunger led a spirited rally in front of hundreds of devastated racegoers.

"We've got to stay positive. We aren't giving up on this. We need to be vigilant," Mr Aunger told the crowd.On Tuesday Transport Minister Andrew Constance issued a press release promising to build a new speedway before the current site is acquired in 2021."The community and racing fans can be assured that the NSW government remains absolutely committed to relocating speedway racing in Sydney," Mr Constance said.This bit of dirt is sacred to us.

The speedway, now known as Valvoline Raceway, was built in 1977 by Sid Hopping and Bert Wilder. It lies on Crown land next to the M4 motorway."You would not put a train line in a church," a young woman said. "To you it might just be a bit of dirt and concrete. It might just be a place where people drive around in circles, but to us it's more than that. It's a place of worship ... this bit of dirt is sacred to us."
