Professor Raina MacIntyre, head of the Biosecurity Program at UNSW's Kirby Institute, said she would be surprised if Australia succumbed to a serious outbreak. "It could be that we do manage to contain it to small outbreaks ... but we still have to think about worst-case-scenario."
Based on Professor MacIntyre's worst-case-scenario modelling, if 50 per cent of the population were infected, about 1.8 million people would need a hospital bed and 650,000 could require intensive care. The NSW Health pandemic plan proposes establishing advanced screening stations outside emergency departments and standalone "pandemic assessment centres" to triage patients suspected of having the virus.
Up to 40 per cent of the workforce could be off work at any time during a pandemic because of illness, caring for family or fear of contracting the virus in the workplace or public transport, according to estimates in the Victorian pandemic plan.
Now think about banning flight from SK Japan and Italy maybe Iran, I don’t think gov will do that, instead they advise people to prepare for the outbreak.
