Heather Taylor will launch her 7-metre boat into the Pacific Ocean in April in a bid to become the first Australian to cross solo from California to Hawaii.

When Taylor was 17, she visited Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and witnessed extreme poverty for the first time.

The experience, along with the charitable work of her parents, planted the seed which would eventually lead to Taylor's ocean crossing."I went to Malawi, and I think coming back from a trip to visit some friends in Malawi, I was left with the feeling that I could live there, but I was trying to figure out how I can contribute without taking a job from someone."

She settled on raising money by attempting a Pacific crossing, with funds going to two charities focused on ending poverty. While Taylor will do the crossing solo, that was not the original plan, with two rowing partners first committing and then pulling out of the challenge.

DNA evidence frees man who spent 14 years in jail for murder he did not commitRicky Davis's 2005 murder conviction is thrown out by a California court, becoming only the second case in the United States where investigative genetic genealogy has led to the freeing of a wrongly imprisoned person. Proving once again that capital punishment has no place in the world. I bet he did it. This is the flipside of “tough on crime” initiatives. Inevitably innocent people pay the price while others continue to break the law.
