Stosur farewells singles play after her Australian Open loss, where luck hasn’t always gone her way | michaelkoziol

If Australian tennis hasn’t always treated Sam Stosur fairly over the years – and it would be hard to argue otherwise – there was some deserved respite on Thursday afternoon as the 37-year-old bowed out of her professional singles career.

She went one better than that at her final Australian Open, reaching the second round but unable to overcome the power of Russian 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who triumphed 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour under the midday sun. Tennis Australia boss Craig Tiley presents flowers to Sam Stosur after her final Australian Open singles match.Earlier, retired player Todd Woodbridge told Channel Nine that Stosur was undervalued in the tennis pantheon, having been “outshone” by some male players despite her myriad achievements.

Stosur remains in the doubles competition, which she will continue through 2022. She is competing alongside China’s Zhang Shuai, with whom she won the Australian Open women’s doubles in 2019. Over her career Stosur has notched up seven grand slam doubles titles – four women’s and three mixed.

“It’s been a nice ride and I think playing out on that court the last two days I really felt the support from everyone and that was a really nice way to go out and feel that. Regardless of what my results have been here in singles, I’ve always enjoyed playing here.”Stosur said she was very happy to have played Pavlyuchenkova in her final singles match. “To finish with someone that you know and really respect as a person and a player, it’s a perfect ending.
