Four locals will play in the Australian Open men’s doubles final for the first time in 42 years after Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis joined Matt Ebden and Max Purcell in winning their semi-final in straight sets.
Playing on Rod Laver Arena for the first time this tournament, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis defeated third seeds Horacio Zeballos and Marcel Granollers 7-6 , 6-4. Watched by no more than 100 spectators at Margaret Court Arena next door, Ebden and Purcell beat second seed Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram 6-3, 7-6 .
While the atmosphere which greeted the “Special K’s” was more subdued at Rod Laver Arena than it had been at Kia Arena, it wouldn’t be a Kyrgios and Kokkinakis match without some drama. He took offence at the Rod Laver Arena crowd yelling out at the start of his service motion and between first and second serves, and also complained that the let machine was faulty.“When are you going to control the crowd, bro?” he asked the chair umpire.“Four times that game , you don’t say anything.
Kokkinakis held his nerve to force the third seeds to hold serve to stay in the set, but the Australians applied enough pressure to force two break-point opportunities.“I’ve played in a lot of singles matches around the globe with amazing atmospheres but this week with Thanasi, playing in front of you, nothing beats this,” Kyrgios told the fans post match.
