Sixty years ago, a group of women began their nursing training at Royal Perth Hospital, marking the start of a lifelong bond of friendship based around care for the sick.

Beach, about 20 silver-haired women have gathered at a bustling cafe for more than just breakfast and a chat.

The women met in 1960 as 18-year-old nursing students at Royal Perth Hospital and one among them, June Sproat, still works there today. "The hospital is like home for me," said Mrs Sproat, who after 60 years working as a full-time nurse has only this year dropped to three days a week. After graduating, she worked in several different roles before returning to RPH, and she has never left."I'm going to have to wean myself out of the place."

Now 78 years old, the women each year mark the day they met with a breakfast on the first Sunday in February.
