Despite being one of the world's most vaccinated countries, Singapore is being forced to reimpose restrictions and delay opening up due to a surge in infections. So what does that mean for Australia's four-step opening plan, based on 80 per cent inoculation?

"The community cases have actually gone up since reaching 80 per cent coverage, in part because we're allowing more social events for those who are vaccinated and, I dare say, more fatigue at the control measures," Mr Cook told the ABC.

Mr Morrison, who has set an 80 per cent national vaccination target, met with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in June. Singapore has only 35 seriously ill COVID-19 patients, with seven in ICU, according to its Ministry of Health. And it closed the popular Chinatown Complex, frequented by seniors over the age of 60, after a cluster of 44 infections.Leong Hoe Nam, an infectious diseases expert from Singapore's Rophi Clinic, said the Delta strain had moved the goalposts, in terms of what level of community vaccination was necessary.

No one said that vaccination stops you getting Delta. This article is just scare mongering

derrrr

I live in SG, there are only 6 people in ICU; people requiring hospitalization are mostly non vaccinated ones. I'm not advocating to open up completely, but there is solid evidence that with 80% is ok to get some freedoms back once vaccinated

One thing is proved, Vaccination do not stop the Coronavirus, it prevents people from getting hospitalized to a greater extent. I wonder when the countries will realize its time to acknowledge the fact and live with the virus. Lockdowns are alright, but not resulting as expected.

But the death rate is negligible. Vaccination works.

Hmmm, seriously ill, ICU & deaths extremely low despite large covid cases. Looks more like 80%+ vaccination actually works… A bit like reporting surging spring hay fever

If we had a vaccine that worked properly it would stop infections surging. Sadly it is obviously not the case.

Israel, Iceland, the Seychelles and Gibralter showed us this months ago. The CDC also confirmed it in July. Vaccinations do not stop the spread of COVID. The vaccines mitigate case severity. The ABC knows this as well as anyone. Stop the gaslighting and feigned ignorance.

Why am I not surprised it is ABC carrying this story

Misleading headlines like this get used by anti-vaxxers as evidence for why the jab is pointless. Shouldn’t this be about how 80% vax has lead to only 35 hospitalisation at the highest number of cases so far - the vital evidence that vax is achieving its goal?!

When a 'statistician' has a hypothesis, she collects/analyses data & tries to disprove her own hypothesis. If she can't disprove it, then people take her hypothesis as truth. In Australia, we're putting all Australians' safety on risk just to prove someone's 'modelling'!?

FIXED: SINGAPORE SHOWS 80% VACCINATIONS (of total pop, not just 16+) reduces death to approx 150-200 a year to allow opening up fully.

80% was never going to be enough. 95% of total population is needed to get herd immunity that is likely to protect those who cannot be vaccinated. If you won't get vaccinated be prepared to get sick and die.

Infants couldn’t get vaccinated, so what would happen to them if we lift the restrictions

Vaccinations!

Only 35 in hospital, and only 7 in ICU. I know that is STILL unfortunate, but definitely NOT a panic situation. Illnesses of all kinds unfortunately DO take, and always will take Human Life. LIFE is the word here, you can't stop living for fear of a virus. Vaccinate, and move on.

It’s not as clean as Australia and it’s over populated

The tin foil hat wearers won't give a hoot. Some nobhead in the usa has read a 100 word post by a retired alchemist from Haiti that says eating bat guano will cure you of all ills and covid19 is for wimps

Around 20% of the Australian population is under 16, they're not even included in the goals set by ScoMo. Singapore's data is based in their entire population. But hey who cares about our kids 😳😳

Irresponsible, fear mongering, click bait headline. Do better JasonDasey

Eh? That's what is expected to happen isn't it because that'll be around when opening up begins & when the anti vaxers will be left mostly on their own?

and they are good at this.. but I think Gladys' NSW experiment will set an example for everyone else to learn from

Australia keeps peddling freedom as the target for vaccination roll out. When they know Vaccines will not give you freedom! Remember if you don't get your freedoms you cant unvaccinated yourself! LOL

No-one in NSW is listening...falling on too many deaf ears!

Shitty reporting ABC... give me back today’s 8 cents as you don’t deserve it.

Because of the protection of vaccination, Singapore has 35 ill and seven in ICU. Covid is here to stay. Infections but prevention of illness and death through vaccine.

Headline grabbing attention

No one is expecting things to go “back to normal” nor does the easing of restrictions suggest back to normal.

Please don’t reopen borders ! AnnastaciaMP

ABC = nothing but endless fear mongering

When are you going to get over your obsessions with case numbers and the use of emotive terms like 'surging'? What are the health outcomes? Not good enough

Why can’t the media be more honest?! Stop scaremongering! The real news is the very few hospitalisations post 80% vaccination rate.

They're not supposed to stop infections, they're supposed to stop hospitalisations and deaths, ensuring that public health systems are but overwhelmed, which they are doing in Singapore

Click bait title. This is the most important line in the whole thing 'We're finding quite a lot of breakthrough infections among vaccinated people, but these are mostly mild or asymptomatic'

BeattieNgiare 90% is better against the Delta variant, which is when WAs McGowan wants to open up. And Gladys wants to open up at 70%?

Finally media doing the right thing

Isn’t it more about hospitalisations than case numbers once you have high vaccinations and open up?

the original ZERO plan was going to work until the airport stuff up

So has Israel UK etc. and every other country that opened up at only 80% of population FullyVaccinated Australia , well at least NSW , will be no different. The plan is if you end up in hospital or die, you end up in hospital or die. Good luck!

So what is the alternative? We can’t stay in lockdown forever! We need to let out bodies get used to this virus, form some natural immunity. We are isolated not just from covid but from every other infectious decease, and this makes us much weaker! These long lockdowns are wrong

‘Fresh air is the safest place to be’: Hazzard raises easing more outdoor restrictionsThe NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says he would support the government potentially easing more restrictions for outdoor settings even before the state reaches the 70 per cent full vaccination target. Would you sit 1.5 meters from someone on the beach not wearing a mask if you knew they had CV19? Would you tell others that was ok for them? If “fresh air is the best place to be” why are we still wearing masks out of doors? It never made any sense. COVID is a virus that only thrives in enclosed spaces If BradHazzard meant that, then why are people in LGAs of concern locked up?
