Nick Newman was shot dead by police on Australia Day in 2018 after he stabbed a police officer at the Maroubra Junction Hotel.

A suspected sex offender was shot dead by police in a Sydney pub when he reacted with “extreme violence” and stabbed a detective who was attempting to lawfully arrest him, a coroner has found.

The shortcomings included two detectives agreeing in a Facebook message that they would walk into the beer garden with their guns out, which Detective Sergeant Breda was not informed of because he was not in the chat.Edwina PicklesDetective Sergeant Breda was also unaware that Newman had a penchant for knives, a detail that had been included in a 30-page report of tips from Crime Stoppers but had, in his opinion, not been adequately flagged.

“The second important thing to remember is, notwithstanding shortcomings in police planning, it was Mr Newman and Mr Newman alone who decided to react with extreme violence to the police officers’ directions that he submit to their lawful arrest,” Magistrate Ryan said.
