The once-mighty restaurant empire of George Calombaris has fallen. 9News

In the end, Calombaris and fellow judges Matt Preston and Gary Mehigan all walked from the show, after 11 successful seasons, when contract negotiations hit a wall.

Increasing costs, fierce industry competition and changes in consumer tastes to favour cheaper mid-tier dining options, were also highlighted by KordaMentha.Administrator Craig Shepard said a "major rebranding" of a number of high-profile venues including Hellenic Hotel Williamstown , Hellenic Republic Brunswick and The Press Club had been unable to turn the business around.

Restaurant prices have remained relatively stagnant in recent years, Mr Lambert said. RCA data revealed average profit in the industry was around 4-5 per cent.According to the RCA, profit margins for restaurants have been sliced by delivery apps, like Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Menulog.A 2019 study by RCA found the digital disruptors were damaging the restaurant industry by encouraging patrons to stay home, and eating into profits.

‘Wrowrowrowro’ What Scooby, the bad man disguised as a celebrity chef is taking money from his employees and making himself rich. Calombaris ‘if it wasn’t for you meddlin kids from Worksafe Australia I woulda got away with it’.

Maybe look at schrinking wages, and high living expenses of consumers. Retailers are feeling it too, there is no money available.

As soon as we heard the payout Calombaris had to make, it was inevitable he would close all his restaurants declare himself bankrupt and have every employee on the street. He still has his millions, the only people hurt are the employees, landlords, suppliers

Would it have been an ‘might restaurant empire’ though if he’d paid his staff correctly from the start?

Let up about it 🙄

Got exactly what he deserved

Happens to the best . The world is even . And for all the employees who lost money too .

No sympathy for people with greed

I feel 4 the workers!

Chefs usually assume everybody likes the food they cook by giving simple dishes a french name in order to convince upcoming go getters a sense of value and a culinary 'experience ' Yes I know chefs don't cook.

Good. He’s a choad

Our media in glee over it.

What's with the mighty empire of George Calombaris has fallen? Rome was a mighty empire, George didn't pay his staff. Sit down.

Yup well done public mob mentality. He was exposed for underpaying staff so how do we protest this? Make them all unemployed. Well done idiots. Well done. Screwed twice.

Shouldn't have come this far, lots of or lost their jobs,I think the blame here lies partly with the press shouting from the rooftops about this whole fiasco, George will be ok most assets are in his partner s name, staff will suffer thanks media 🙌 Serves the scumbag right. The left wing lynch mob have got their way and completely destroyed him for a mistake that was rectified. They don’t care that they have cost 400 people their jobs and livelihood.
