'She's the future': Howard anoints candidate he's just met

John Howard may not have met Fiona Martin before – but he’s certain she will be an outstanding parliamentarian.Mr Howard responded to his party’s call on Tuesday morning, taking a stroll down Burwood Road in Burwood in aid of the recently pre-selected Liberal candidate for Reid, Ms Martin.Nick Moir

Ms Martin has the credentials. She’s a psychologist, a small businesswoman, and she grew up in the inner west electorate.But she’s facing a tricky battle to retain the seat for the Liberal Party, after incumbent Craig Laundy made a late decision to quit politics and the seat’s 4.7 per cent per cent margin.“I hadn't met her before, no,” he said shortly after extolling Ms Martin’s virtues to the electorate.

“I definitely hadn't. But so what? I'd heard about her. I heard that she’s grown up in the electorate … but there's nothing strange about that. She wasn't the Liberal candidate until quite recently, but I’d read about her and everything.”At one point Labor’s candidate for Reid, Sam Crosby, made a point of interrupting to shake Mr Howard’s hand, only for Ms Martin to direct the party forward.

Pavement space in Reid, which takes in suburbs such as Strathfield, Burwood, Homebush and Five Dock, might be at a premium over the next three weeks. Soon after Ms Martin and Mr Howard departed, Mr Crosby himself embarked on a political street-walk of Burwood Road, accompanied by Labor Senator Penny Wong, and one of the party’s NSW senate candidates Jason Yat-sen Li.
