The sudden and tragic death of a highly respected nurse at Liverpool Hospital has left his family grappling for answers in their grief and isolation.

Praween Maharaj with his youngest daughter Komal, left, wife Sharmil centre, and eldest daughter Charisma.“I don’t think I ever saw him without a smile on his face. He was always the one who struggled for his family and someone always held in high esteem.”In the weeks before his death, Mr Maharaj was eagerly preparing to celebrate his daughter's graduation from university.“He was looking forward to me wearing the gown and holding my degree.

“I said, ‘let me go in, I want to see him. What’s going on?’,” she said. “They told me it was a crime scene ... Then three people came out and told me he was gone."“We didn’t anticipate dad was no longer with us. We thought it was a serious injury, not that we wouldn’t get him back,” she said. Sources familiar with the case have described the circumstances surrounding the patient and Mr Maharaj on condition of anonymity.

Early reports indicated Mr Maharaj may have hit his head. The patient tried to reach his cigarettes, leaving Mr Maharaj on the floor. Sharmil and Praween Maharaj. Praween Maharaj was a nurse in the mental health unit at Liverpool Hospital. Mr Kumar said: “There is nothing we can do to bring Praween back but knowing how much he valued his work and colleagues we don’t want this to happen to anyone else.''
