When Adelaide disability advocate Shane Hryhorec recently passed through Abu Dhabi airport, he wasn't expecting to have his wheelchair seized — but he says his passport was confiscated as well.

Thinking "things couldn't get any worse", Mr Hryhorec then had a further confrontation as he passed through security at Abu Dhabi International Airport that left him feeling "violated, upset" and "angry".

Mr Hryhorec said when he was told to move to an "office chair with a big hole in it and six little wheels", he feared injuring himself and demanded to speak to a manager. "Obviously I was very shaken up — imagine travelling through a destination and having a disability and then getting arrested and getting sent to jail or whatever else."Abu Dhabi International Airport and Etihad Airways have been contacted for comment."I felt like they thought I was a terrorist."

I was told I could not board a flight at Abu Dhabi because I 'looked drunk'. Hadn't had anything to drink. After much discussion I was allowed on the flight. We all have annoying experiences, we just have to suck it up.

Really? I pushed my daughter through the screening gate and had to lift her out so they could check it. No issues. Stop playing the victim and be grateful that they ensure the flight was safe.

In other words, 'I was treated just like an able bodied person', I feel victimised.

Every international airport I've been through have 'confiscated' my passport. 1 minute later they give it you back. Do I need to feel violated?

Simple don’t go to those places. Unless total required. I’d love to go to China but I don’t trust them so I don’t go

Poor Shane.

For all the complaining people do about Australia, they always go overseas and quickly learn how good they have it here.

Don't like the rules? Don't travel by air then.

From the indigenous or non-indigenous community? Anglo or Irish or European by heritage White Australian?
