Lisa Verrier usually spends nearly all her spare time at her shack on Tasmania's east coast; she is one of many Tasmanians who may have inadvertently voided their insurance by following government directions and staying away from their properties due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tasmanian shack owners have been encouraged to check they haven't accidentally voided their insurance by following State Government directions and staying away from their holiday homes for the past two months.

Helicopters were deployed over coastal communities during the Easter long weekend to make sure Tasmanians were heeding the strict orders announced late March. Tasmania's RACT Insurance was one company to extend its non-occupancy limit to 120 days for shack owners affected by coronavirus restrictions. "We do find circumstances where customers feel much more at ease if they have that noted on their policy, and where customers contact us, we endorse and note that unoccupancy is going to happen, so they have that level of comfort that coverage is still in place," he said.Daniel Graham from consumer advocacy group Choice said non-occupancy limits ranged from 60 to 120 days.
