COVID positive workers at a South Australian abattoir were told to keep working last week due to a state government-backed order. At least 140 people linked to the site have now contracted the virus. They've spoken out to SBS News.

Workers at the Teys meatworks in Naracoorte, in South Australia’s southeast, say they were told to keep working despite testing positive to COVID-19 last week due to an SA Health-backed order.

Last Sunday the abattoir’s general manager of operations, Sage Murray, told staff in a letter they should still come to work unless they were "feeling unwell". But SBS News has spoken to four other members of staff who said workers who were COVID positive and returned to the abattoir were not adequately separated from those who were negative. One of the abattoir workers SBS News spoke to.“The positive ones, they take table one to table five, and the negative ones take table six to table 10. But we still go and dine together, we use the same toilets and the same smoking area,” Sam said.“It’s impossible for them to not get COVID-19.

"In fact, we are specifically instructing our workers not to present for work if they feel unwell or they do not meet the strict requirements of the relevant state health authorities."Teys defended its handling of the outbreak and said it worked strictly according to the requirements of the relevant health authorities across several states.

It said it had decided to suspend "all supply through Tey's South Australian facility while we work with Teys, SA Health and Safework SA to understand the protocols currently in place for their team and operations".

SBS I'd sue the company putting your life at risk of death with a deadly virus he's liable big time

At the end of the day it all comes down to money ...

We all know how green spots get on potato chips, so would you trust sick coughing meat workers?

Apparently internally I've heard that teachers are also under the same instruction, although I'm not 100% certain...

dailypostdan Hi Dan, Does that mean we now have to eat our stake well done to make sure the C-19-'O' buges are cooked tooif in S.A.

I’m assuming that if they were CEO’s, lawyers, judges or architects they wouldn’t be ordered back to work while infected with covid

Anyone working there knowingly being positive, should have told their boss to get stuffed. If they were then fired, they should have taken their cases to Fair work via their Union.

But, but, but Novak has been deported already. Surely there's no virus to spread now? And, why gov directive to keep working? I thought health was the top priority? Who cares about losing businesses, jobs etc. Bureaucrats still get their full pay :)

😔

Public health advice the same people that tell you to get vaccinated, yeah? LOL

Australia has a dark under belly, exploitation of our migration workers is not a fair society ?

Putting profits before people should be a criminal offence. It is known that Covid can survive on frozen meat so by his actions the management not only put his workers in danger but anyone who handles the meat including the public. Absolutely criminal behaviour

Wouldn't the products be contaminated?

SenatorWong

Glad Novak isn't here to spread it.

Why don't we ever hear of similar things from veggie processing businesses? 🧐

This is EXACTLY what happened at meat processing facilities across the US in 2020. Thousands of workers were spreading the virus to each other & their families bc of directives to stay at work, despite showing symptoms. Australia does not want this.
