The NSW Rural Fire Service Association has called for urgent state government funding to upgrade their ageing fleet of 3,820 fire trucks.

The NSW government says it will consider an urgent plea for funding to upgrade the state's ageing fleet of fire trucks.

The Weekend Australian reports that the NSW Rural Fire Service Association submitted a business case to the government to upgrade the fleet of 3,820 tankers last year. NSW Rural Fire Service crews wash chemical fire retardant off their truck after it was dropped to protect houses at South Turramurra, north of Sydney. Some trucks sent to battle the devastating bushfires that killed 25 people and destroyed 2,439 homes were up to 30 years old and lacked emergency sprinkler systems, heat-resistant materials, or did not have roll bars.

"With current expenditure, we can't replace them quick enough," NSW RFSA president Brian McDonough told the newspaper."Some of the trucks are over 25 years old and therefore the protection and technology is not the same as the trucks that are less than four or five years old." NSW Emergency Services Minister David Elliott's office confirmed the NSW RFSA's business case has been received and would be considered in the state's upcoming budget.

Could someone tell me where has all the millions of $'s that has been donated to the Rural Fire Serves gone? AustralianFires WhereHasAllTheDonationsGone? auspol

I spent some time with the boys today. It was interesting hearing about their experiences. Some of the trucks that were out and got into trouble weren’t equipped or meant for that purpose. The accomodation down the coast was inappropriate too.

How are you going with this GladysB or are you still desperate to spend an unnecessary $1billion on moving the Powerhouse when it should be left where it is?

SeanBradbery A fossil fuel levy to pay for them

Agree completely. The tankers we were assigned to while on strike team duty were very deficient - aged, poorly maintained and lacking important equipment.

How many millions was donated that the RFS cannot give to fire victims but had to be used to support the RFS

Gladys spent it all on the worlds slowest tram, and knocking down perfectly good stadiums... the only way she is going to pay for fire trucks is by sacking 12000 more public servants on Christmas Eve...

And after the hell that Australia’s just been through and after witnessing the heroism and sacrifice we’ve seen from the RFS during this terrible summer they damn well better GET the funding ~ isn’t that right GladysB ScottMorrisonMP AlboMP JacquiLambie DanielAndrewsMP

it went on the light rail,

And how about we manufacture them right here in Australia? And while we are at it, trains too! As we did, at Goninans! If anything this virus outbreak has told us, is that Australia needs to be more self reliant! Make our own'stuff' like we used to! We have become just a quarry!

Celeste Barber raised $50 million plus for RFS whose trust deed states the money is to be directed '…to or for the brigades in order to enable or assist them to meet the costs of purchasing and maintaining fire-fighting equipment and facilities...'

deniseshrivell RFS is a State funded service owned by the people The State is responsible for maintaining and upgrading it - RFS should not have to ask! The donations are not getting to the people - separate to funding and not an excuse to withhold funding

deniseshrivell RFS got a load of money donated to them recently. (I am told the govt got that money) it should not be a problem getting them new equipment. But we cannot believe any govt now,so full of lies and spin. How about an in-depth investigative journo article on the fires/money issue?
