Rufina's parents expected her to marry someone from her culture. So when she fell in love with a much older Brazilian driving instructor with two children from a previous marriage, it's fair to say they weren't thrilled.

The 52-year-old opened her first real estate office in Sydney's western suburbs 17 years ago, soon after her son was born.

It was her husband's idea to start the business, but"I'm the one who actually started it, I ran it, and in the fifth year he quit his job [to work with me]".

They are more likely to think sexual discrimination is widespread in Australia compared with non-Chinese Australians , and are also less likely to agree that"the decline of the traditional family unit has made us worse off" than other Australians .However, they are not necessarily engaged in mainstream movements for gender equality or feminism.

"I don't think we're really interested. Because we were never brought up to think that way. I think we think, what's the big deal? What's the fuss all about?" says Rufina.We asked three Chinese-Australian women from different generations to share their experiences of growing up in Australia and how it's shaped their views on culture, gender and identity.Rufina's family lived in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in north-west China.

They fled to Australia as refugees in the 1970s, and soon found work together again in the factories.
