The Royal Flying Doctor Service’s capabilities have been seriously tested during the pandemic with more than 2700 patients suspected of having COVID-19 being rushed to a medical facility.

The RFDS transported more than 770 patients by air and more than 1900 by road to a medical facility between February and December.

They made an average of 70 flights per month around the nation between February 1 and December 28 that put a “financial strain” on the RFDS, he said. Besides attending to patients in rural and regional areas with suspected COVID-19, the RFDS also experienced a spike in aeromedical retrievals for babies with congenital malformations and adults with heart conditions.

“We did see a statistical increase during restrictions of six and post-restriction period of three, and while that number value is very low, it is a rare retrieval for us,” he said.
