The Arrernte Anmatjere woman was the first Aboriginal female lead actor in 1955 film Jedda, and dedicated her life to social and political activism

in 1937. Her parents were of the Anmatjere people and her paternal grandfather was German.

Jedda was the first ever Australian feature film to be shot in colour, and was a success in the country but not overseas. The Chauvels credited Kunoth-Monks as Ngarla Kunoth in the film, as they wanted her to have a distinctively Indigenous name. They chose her mother’s skin title, which Kunoth-Monks found distressing. SheThe film premiered at Darwin’s Star Theatre in 1955; as it was a segregated cinema at the time, Kunoth-Monks was given special dispensation to sit with the white audience.

Praise pours in for Dylan Alcott after being named Australian of the YearSports stars and disability advocates are applauding Dylan Alcott after he was named the first-ever Australian of the Year with a visible disability. When Labor came up with the NDIS it was supposed to be paid for with an increase in the Medicare levy. Tony Abbott scrapped the levy and left the NDIS without funding. Thank you for updating your reporting and correcting the error in claiming Dylan was the first disabled winner outright. It's still not the wording I would have chosen but at least you're not erasing Grace Tames autism now.
