The Fair Work Ombudsman just had its busiest year on record, with 18,000 workers repaid after having their wages stolen and 23 court cases netting $4.4 million in fines.

Ripped-off workers have been compensated more than $40 million in stolen or lost wages recovered by the Fair Work Ombudsman over the past year.More than half the Fair Work Ombudsman's legal actions involved the fast food, restaurant and cafe sector

$40 million was repaid to workers, with celebrity chef George Calobaris's restaurant chain accounting for $8 million of the total The highest recovery in the workplace regulator's history comes after the resolution of 29,000 workplace disputes, 17.8 million visits to the ombudsman website and 380,000 calls from employees questioning irregularities in their pay and conditions.
