Rio Tinto has issued an apology after blowing up a 46,000-year-old Aboriginal cave site in Western Australia, vowing to urgently review its plans for other sites nearby and its approach to dealing with heritage matters

Mining giant .

"We pay our respects to the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura People , and we are sorry for the distress we have caused. Our relationship with the PKKP matters a lot to Rio Tinto, having worked together for many years," Mr Salisbury said in a statement.Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Ken Wyatt last week flagged an urgent review of state and federal heritage protection laws, and Mr Salisbury said Rio would launch a wider review into its heritage approach.

"Three decades ago we were the first mining company to recognise native title. Today we also recognise that a review is needed in relation to the management of heritage in Western Australia more broadly, and we will advocate where relevant for legislative reform."

Too little too late!!! Close that mine down while investigating, make sure RioTinto keeps paying the workers

I cannot believe that RIO didn’t know what was in front of the mining bucket from a mine planning perspective. It defies logic particularly operating in aboriginal lands. Surely it had been defined in anthropological surveys of its planned areas for mining. 😳

britishmuseum listening to your History of the World in 100 Objects and wonder how this destruction is viewing in archaeology circles?

Too little too late but you knew that didn’t you

How about they put there money where their mouth is ... pay for all kids to go to uni, ensure top dollar health care and provide housing for First Nations folk there.

“Oops, sorry, we blew up a significant part of your culture. But that’s ok, because the Liberal government won’t do anything to punish us, and people will forget in a few months.” Fuck this country.

‘Ask for forgiveness not permission’ is that how the saying goes? This is repulsive act of cultural terrorism. Those responsible should be in jail!

🤬🤬🤬

Repair and rebuild the site

Lying bastards

Rio Tinto now have what they want ! The company offer an apology that means nothing . They should not be allowed to mine in this area and have to also pay a significant fine ! Can you believe these mining giants not only want to mine our minerals but also don’t pay a mining tax!

Intentional and the sorry is simply 🤮 RioTinto

RioTinto What a joke. It's a disgrace, and absolutely heartbreaking.

😓

Absolutely disgraceful...Rio Tinto must be made accountable...sorry doesn't cut it

They (RioTinto) are only sorry if they give up all rights to EVER mine JuukanGorge .

If serious, Rio should leave the site without further intruding into this sacred site, and paying our Aboriginal people a significant sum for the trauma caused

Elusive_Sausage this shit is a huge problem . If you’re a billionaire company that relies on fossil fuels $ maybe not a big problem.

Lip service - RioTinto is disgusting and one can only hope their shares fall through the floor as no decent Australian would want them - just soulless bastards like these money grubbing hooligans

Such a disgrace people have become

I wish Rio Tinto would blow itself up.

As Colonialism knew of its destructiveness... Rio Tinto knew of its destructiveness.. In full knowledge complicit in the act- we await PM to explain Governments complicit - knowledge..!!!!?

I’m sure they are heart broken

Panguna mine pit, just abandoned with no cleanup by Rio Tinto. True to form by these scumbags.

Like catholic priest paedophiles - commit the crime, go to confession - all good. Off we go again. Disgusting RioTinto

Indescribable vandalism 🤬

I watched Avatar last night, and all I could think of was Rio Tinto.

Sorry! No chance. What scam.

Authorities who have the mandate to approve and supervise Rio Tinto should be held accountable for this damage.

I’d prefer the site not destroyed rather than an apology. What compensation will Rio Tinto pay to prove they are really sorry. How about all the profits from the site going to the local lands council.

We are Rio Tinto and we do what we want....

A meaningless, hollow and insulting 'apology'. If you are going to have to apologise for something, you ought not do it in the first place.

The government knew it was going to do this Sorry does not cut it RT

they going to repair it?

Review now!

Sorry we got caught**

South Park BP Oil Spill.

Oh soz......are they fkn kidding?

All for the greedy rich shame on You Rio Tinto

Blow up apologies later no damage done. Fine the Bastard $5m that’s what the developers did during the 70s in Sydney who could forget the Regent theatre in George st.

FuckRioTinto

They should lose their lease for this area and never be given a lease on land where there is culturally significant history again.

Imagine if Rio Tinto had destroyed the National War Memorial. What would the consequences be? An act of contempt and ignorance. An apology will never be enough.

That's like purposefully running over someones pet then apologising for purposefully running it over.

Oh well that fixes everything 🤦‍♂️

Hahaha...... fucking oops accidentally destroyed your heritage

An apology would involve restitution , and excising EVERY other site and a wide area around it for future cultural, scientific, and environmental purposes. No other apology should be acceptable.

And still, Rio Tinto wishes to strengthen their partnership with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people. 46,000 years of history gone, how can this be salvaged?

Get them out.. ScoMo make them accountable. Our first nations heritage and culture destroyed. Sickening shameful

I think jailing those responsible in gov and the company would be appropriate.

Fake News

The caves can't be rebuilt but the least Rio Tinto can do is to build on the site, a communal gathering place and memorial, designed in consultation with the community.

Should be forced to pay millions to the indigenous so they can build up their communities

The 'company' should be deregistered and the board imprisoned while assets are stripped.

EpicFail.

A fat lot of good an apology does Rio Tinto. How dare you. Criminal vandals.

Can't wait to see what they've got in store for next year's ReconciliationWeek.

RioTinto we do NOT accept your apology. You knew what you were destroying and did it anyway. You are not sorry you are despicable.

boycottRioTinto

The cathedral. The opera house. Oh sorry, my bad. They’d be hounded out of town!

Only after it becoming public.

What was the company looking for?

How about urgently review its whole cultural heritage and natural environment philosophy and practice?

I thought keithjpitt said rio had all the approvals necessary

When is the australian government?

The whole world lost an important cultural site when Rio Tinto blasted it. It should now be preserved to provide a demonstration of the worst of mining practice.

davrosz Crocodile tears!

Sounds like willful damage of heritage property

So they got caught out and were saving face, or concerned of litigation?

Really, sorry is that all! It’s akin to blowing up the Lourve!

Big deal. About as useful as stuartrobertmp's 'My bad'.

Immoral arseholes!

How many have been blasted previously

Wgat they mean to say is - sorry, not sorry.

Check your Superannuation. Does your acct hold Rio Tinto shares? You know what to do.

'Sorry that you finally noticed what we've been doing all along', in other words!

In other words they will wait for it to blow over and continue on.

Saying sorry is just not good enough 😡😭 Rio Tinto shouldn’t be working anywhere near these historic sites. I am horrified that this has happened at all

To little to late how this crap can happen is beyond belief once again one of the bosses of LNP doing whatever they want how much bribe bonuses have they paid this time

NoNonsenseRN The 2020 ASX gold medal winner for corporate and social responsibility... goes to.....😏..

This is not even the minimum standard RioTinto should have been working to all along. It's a sickening loss. It's a shambolic, colossal and unforgivable error.

An apology? They should just fuck right off! Does the Gov. issue a licence or lease too them? If so it should be taken off them.

I remember the outcry when the Taliban bombed and destroyed the Bhuda carvings and when ISIS destroyed Palmyra, this is worse. The bastards at Rio Tinto should resigns and leave this country immediately, they behave like terrorises and should be treated as such

All of this coming to light after National Sorry Day and during Reconciliation week 2020 Inthistogether ShameRioTinto

Deetails1 “Sorry”? “Sorry”?! “Sorry we blew up 40,000 year old art?! The equivalent of the Sistine Chapel. On purpose? For money?” “We pay our respects to....” That’s not an apology, Rio Tinto. Those are meaningless platitudes. Your words are incongruent with your actions. notgoodenough

An 'apology' won't bring back the site. Fuckheads.

Kick them off. It's not their land.

lotta good an apology does now!

No apology is adequate. This is an unforgivable atrocity. auspol

So what Rio Tinto didn’t know beforehand? Apology unacceptable

Liars.

This is outrageous. How can the authorities allow this? This is like blowing up a cemetery. Shame on Rio Tinto and worse the Australian government to allow it. Its much easier to seek forgiveness than to seek permission!!! But they seem to have received permission. SHAMEFUL

C'est pitoyable.

Of course they have said sorry and they will implement a plan that it doesn't happen again how fucking wonderful Just like the river in Bougainville destroyed completely no wonder the local land owners kicked them out ..

How could RioTinto not know they were blowing it up when it has been approved for years and protested same?

An Apology costs NOTHING. RioTinto should now belong to the Indigenous people of Australia! AND The Whole Management team should be mailed for 46,000 years!

apologies dontwork. A massive huge fine thanks.

But it’s all too late. An apology is worth absolutely nothing. Appalling and devastating action by Rio Tinto

RioTinto ~ A pack of tax dodging looters & vandals. No apology will be acceptable or accepted. EVER. Absolutely sickening. If you blew up the War Memorial you'd all be thrown in the slammer, but because you lot view sacred land as a money pit, you don't fucking care at all.

RioTinto No words of apology could ever make up for the damage you have caused. Sheer lack of ethics on behalf of your company and those that granted ministerial approval. There should be compensation to the Aboriginal people of the region and West Australians as a whole.

Bullshit

RioTinto my little tweet probably won’t even hit your radar. But acts like this aren’t little mistakes by middle management. Your execs knew this was to happen and now “apologise” after a backlash. If you were a consumer brand you’d be screwed. Your shareholders should revolt.

Someone should be in fucking gaol for this. They destroyed a site of irreplaceable historical value to all Australians, and sacredness to the traditional owners.

It’s always easy to “apologize” once the damage is done, eh? Smh 🤦🏻‍♀️

davrosz Because we all know the “better to apologise than ask for permission “ is the only way to ensure you get what you want.

Sounds like a cynical apology. Like Amy Cooper the woman who called the police on the black man in Central Park, New York. Rio Tinto also deserves to be fired.

Too late!

Too late now.

Disgusting.

Just worthless corporate spin.

needlesineyes Bit late for that.

If even ONE billionaire or pedophilic CEO were killed on TV, the rest of em would soon realise the consequences. Billions wont save them. Either that or never show your face in public.

Their CEO Jean-Sébastien Jacques needs to pay for this in PERSON. No more mucking around with fake political solutions. He lives in Sydney.

The CEO has a harbourside mansion in Sydney. He's mortal like the rest of us. That's enough info to go on with for now. We just need ONE brave soul.

Mike_Rann WTF is wrong with the world we live in.

Wow

Oh Good. All better now!

Apologising is not enough. That's unforgivable. Absolute disrespect for our nations first people.

They got what they wanted. They knew it was a valuable cultural heritage site and they destroyed it anyway. Apologies are cheap.

This is not right.

Another sorry? Shove it!!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬

To humanity?

'Oops, sorry old chap. Now let us pillage and plunder in peace.'

I’m drowning in Rio Tinto’s crocodile tears.

Fuck RIO Tinto's meaningless apology.

In any other country this would be considered a war crime but sure, good take

TOO DAMN LATE.

Too late

KaushalyaFem Sorry, not sorry? Mea culpa? Theyvshould not have done it.

This is cultural genocide. How is sorry suffice? There should be criminal charges laid. “The caves are the only inland site in Australia to show evidence of continual human occupation through the last Ice Age.”

Rio Tinto says 'oops!' Like it was a mistake. This was a calculated incident for greedy purposes.

Too late now. It should never have happened. It’s criminal!

Bullshit. Fine them. Billions of $$$$$

Sorry ...

Perhaps they could apologise in jail

It’s a bit late.

What? This was an accident? Bullshit.

PCKJ3627 Apologises? Is that it? Are you kidding me? 😡

Ask for forgiveness, not permission.

KaushalyaFem They need to pay $1bil to establish a heritage art protection fund. Nothing less

Absolute disgrace, Should be fined out of existence This is a great lack of respect fir duty of care.

What a load of shit they made a choice to destroy a historic sacred site after years of traditional owners begging and fighting them not to .... fucking RioTinto fought to do this tooLateToSaySorry AbsoluteDisgrace

😂🤣😂😂🤣 What a joke. Are they going to pretend they didnt know the significance of the site next?

What the fuck. Oops sorry! ?

Their brand is synonymous with treason. We won’t forget.

Seriously RioTinto can get stuffed. They knew exactly what they were doing. They should be kicked out of Oz and their Australian operations nationalized.

Bit too late. Rio Tinto couldn’t care less, they are profiting...

Cultural vandalism for $$$. An insincere apology won’t bring it back.

2020 & Aboriginals continue to be trampled upon for capital.

RioTinto knew exactly what they were doing. The damage can not be undone.

Old adage, 'better to ask forgiveness, somethin somethin...

Oh great, that makes it all better Ripo Tinto Taliban.

Dirty deeds....done dirt cheap. FU Rio

Another apology that's seems to be abit hollow. let' see what Rio Tinto board do next. It's on them to remedy this act of vandalism & disrespect of our country & peoples .

Was that before of after the statement referring to said historical artifacts being the property of Rio Tinto?

Not good enough. They have form for destruction. Nothing will be good enough...the damage has been done, heritage wiped out. dirtydeeds

Ah yes the old apologise after rather than get permission first. An old and reliable tactic.

Rio Tinto immediately demands proof that its detractors strive to preserve their own civilization, rather than sit on a couch as everything descends into ignorance. If not, let them get their own cave.

Utterly disgraceful. A global tragedy.

Well isn't that just sweet of them. This wasn't just a tragic loss for the Indigenous people who were descended from the inhabitants of that cave, it was a loss of another small part of our species' history and heritage.

Bit friggen late RioTinto. How about engaging authentically with the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people. Your RAP is tokenistic at best

Apology not accepted. What they did was legal, but they had a choice, and they chose cold white profit. Shame on you Rio Tinto.

Bullshit RioTinto . Your contractor SCARP Archaeology gave you comprehensive reports on the international significance of these sites. You CHOSE to ignore those reports and destroyed the whole place for no other reason than bastardry. International pariahas.

What a load of codswallop!

Jesus, it’s a useless did this happen? . I am disgusted in Rio Tinto.

VoteSustainable 'It's easier to ask for forgiveness than seek permission.' - catch phrase of an unhealthy institution.

You bloody scumbags knew what you were doing... Fake apology now.

Now that they’ve destroyed an irreplaceable, unique site of national significance, the apology is cheap. They’ve still got access to the iron ore they wanted and will go on from here as if nothing’s happened. This is just an easy way of pushing the problem under the carpet! 😡😡

Oops we blew up St Paul’s Cathedral. Sorry. Move on. Nothing to see here.

Too little too late.

Too fucking late. Make amends RioTinto .. exactly.. you can’t

Blow it up first and apologise later... it’s easier to say sorry dan ask for permission that’s probably their motto

Too fucking late, I think

What fucking good is an apology?

Sorry eh? But it’s done!

How can you possible, with a straight face, appologise for a cultural atrocity that you planned?

Yeah right. Big business are scum.

The relevant executive should be sacked, RioTinto Appalling failure of governance. Unforgivable.

Issuing an apology after fighting to blow this site up for years Smh

Not good enough RioTinto AboriginalHeritage

RioTinto you must really think the public is stupid to think this is going to change how we view your aboriginal vandalism

Soul destroying ignorance!

Hollow

phew thank god they apologised otherwise we might have had to force big businesses to take responsibility for crimes against humanity

I heard on insiders that KenWyatt knew it was going to happen... auspol AuspolSoCorrupt

Always ask for forgiveness instead of permission.

I might buy Rio shares so i can go to their AGM and protest. Their Board should hang their heads in shame.

Fine the fuckers 100% of their profits for 46 000 years.

Too little too late

Just curious, who in the WA planning department approved this?

😡😡

RioTinto apology not accepted. You have some nerve ‘apologising’, when you did what you did knowingly, deliberately, callously, heartlessly, knowing the hurt it would cause. But you did it anyway. shameriotinto.

Being sorry won't revert the wrong doing.

Mental...this is outrageous

FuckRioTinto

Yes fine, are they still going to mine here?

Apologies won't undo that.

Even children know it's easier seek forgiveness than permission. Great corporate citizens.

Fuck. Them. To. Hell.

No they don’t. They got caught. damagecontrol

Terminate any plans you have of continuing to mine at the site and make some serious reparations to the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura People.

Appalling RioTinto. Zero credibility. Where is the accountability?

Won’t bring it back will it. Cease mining in this land, that’s be a better statement

Are they still going to mine the site? If so, the apology means absolutely nothing.

Rio Tinto knee axactly what they were doing when they blew up those caves. They knew, once the shot went off there wasn’t a thing anybody could do about it😡

RESPECT is supposedly one of their company values

They’re no sorry RioTinto

Desecrators

Bastards

They knew what they had, they refused to delay because technically they did not have to, they made a press release before pushback saying 'weve been working with the indigenous community for years'. Fuck your apology. Live in infamy.

Who's going to jail?

Inept... just like the LNP govt

Damage control anyone.. RioTinto

RioTinto are only saying sorry because they were caught. Due diligence with environmental survey would've revealed this. Or maybe it did and they didn't care.

shit-tier humanity on display

tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine and leave the country ! auspol RioTinto

Yeah that’ll fix it.

Yet when anyone else doesn't comply with heritage protocol they're fined ridiculous amounts of $$

Honestly, do you think this line is:

Too fucking late.

Apologies mean shit all. Make them *suffer*.

Eat my shit, Rio Tinto.

Where the fuck are the AFP? They have a job and they consistently refuse to do it! I want an ICAC and they better be the first investigation morrisonsprivatepolice

RioTinto bullshit apology as if your staff or contractors had no idea what they were doing. No respect for our nation’s heritage, even a $50 million fine wouldn’t attenuate for this reckless vandalism. wapol auspol

This is completely unacceptable. How dare they.

Fuck them

Ah an apology. All cool and normal carry on... I want prosecution allthe way from the CEO to the grubby little shitbags who payed the dynamite. No Eichmann defence...

Imagine the outcry from rich white & powerful if Rio Tinto had blown up a statue of a dead white guy like Capt Cook, blow up an Indigenous heritage site 46000 years old and they’re like so what

They knew beforehand what they were destroying so why not urgently review things like ... beforehand?

Oh that will fix it

Shame, shame, shame

Too late eh

That’s ridiculous

I think millennials call that ‘sorry not sorry’

They knew what they were doing. Ken Wyatt knew what they were doing. What good is an apology now? Rio Tinto, you are a disgrace.

Any apology is now too late. Disrespect of cultural heritage has no place anywhere!

'I know I ran you over but don't worry, I'll get some driving lessons.'

Phildecynic Just doesn’t cut it sorry.....

...a bit late

Maybe they can give over 1% of their profits as compensation for the next 46000 years?

Karmageddon67 Not Fucking good enough RioTinto

You blew it up!!! A little too late to apologize for blowing up 46k years of culture and country.

A bit friggin late now you bastards

Oh that changes everything...

Not good enough. This country needs a Dexter.......

They're sorry they got caught. They knew what they were doing. You don't accidentally do something like this. They were fully aware, and they only care about the fact they getting negative press.

RioTinto board should step down as minimum

Too little too late. Show some respect.

Ooops...!!

InsidersABC So it’s true Ken Wyatt knew in advance. That’s 2 strikes ( Aged RC & this). I guess it’s easier for RioTinto to beg for forgiveness and pay off the chiefs rather than accepting they’d never get permission. Even a historical pub in Melbourne has better protection

Fat lot of good now after they've destroyed the site.

An APOLOGY....

Look at what they do and not what they say. Words are cheap.

“AN APOLOGY”!! S M H !!!

Not good enough.

In terms of a materiality significant event, as far as failures in risk management go this is the miners equivalent of CBA and Wesptac’s anti money laundering scandal which cost them CEO and Board scalps. It essential that their is an independent enquiry into this catastrophe.

Yet shitty buildings maybe 100 years young are heritage listed in Australia. Inquiries and apologies! Hi he aussi way

auspoI sorrynotsorry

Great. But too bloody late. Vandals

What a joke

Phildecynic Well Rio Tinto must have heard the out rage from the people because we did NOT hear a peep out of the LNP!

I'm calling bullshit.

Ahhh, the old “it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission” excuse! No penalty from our Govt I’ll bet. Faaaaark, no wonder nobody takes Govt or big business seriously in this country. They should be fined $10K for every year of history they erased! Fuckers!

How about an audit of their staff, present and past, who for years stole thousands of stones and fossils/artefacts for putting around their pools 😠

Clayton's apology. Whoops. My finger on the carefully planned button slipped. We see you Rio Tinto. Another disgusting act.

These troglodites are only apologising as a result of the outcry after being caught. If more of Australia's msm did its job well, RioTinto and its lapdogs in politics would be too afraid to do it again. auspol

😦

Appalling greedy bastards

What apology? Look how close the mine is being dynamited to the world heritage site... they don’t give a fuck.

More like public outrage !! But I see they’re using the old “do it & apologise later “ As for urgently reviewing other site’s . All that means is we’ll delay blowing up historic site’s until the heat dies down

$hit happens.

riotinto Issue some muhfuggin royalties and stop scarring this country

Wanton destruction of national heritage is what the Taliban do. How the hell can this happen RioTinto ? Absolutely disgusting.

Yeah nah. They knew what they were doing.

GeoffField and by saying 'I'm sorry' is going to bring back the sites how...?

This is so so wrong. Unforgivable. For an idea of how old these sites were, they were 41,000 years old when the pyramids were built.

Dear Rio Tinto 🖕keep talking shit

Meaningless fluff from RioTinto.

How much compensation will they be paying to Indigenous communities?

Until next time. After all words are cheap and don’t impact the profits.

Too little, too late. This isn't the first time something like this has happened at a sacred site because of the mining industry. They couldn't care less & don't deserve to operate in Australia. Australia would be perfect if white man had never discovered it. Shame on Rio Tinto.

I nearly bought RIO shares...until this happened

RioTinto a bit late and sorry doesn’t cut it

Sure. They'll just lobby their mates in Govt to make sure reporting on things they do, illegal. So then we won't know anything. Problem sorted.

Rio Tinto should be nationalised and its executives pilloried

Oh, well that’s all right then 🤨 sarcasmfont

After the fact, like they care!

An apology just doesn’t cut it. They destroyed a 46,000-year-old Aboriginal cave site. This site is irreplaceable. The Government is also to blame. It should have designated it a cultural heritage site & protected it from destructive vandalism by Rio Tinto.

myofoz Disgusting. They can't pretend they didn't know what they were doing. Sick fucks.

So long as we ask forgiveness, we can sin all we want hey...

Apologies be fucked monumental fine & forfeit the project

$1B compensation payment over 10 years to the traditional owners to firstly assist with as much site restoration as is possible & secondly in setting up a preservation & tourism industry covering the region.

Maybe $40bn

Irresponsible they should be heavily fined.

Too f’ing late RioTinto - Chinese (CCP) owned company committing vandalism of a significant and sacred site on Australian land. No we don’t forgive you.

Gov't should give harsh punishment to Rio Tinto.

.Not good enough

Er, sure...because an apology by RioTinto will rebuild a site used for nearly 50,000 year. Just think for a moment the history wiped out....for what? A few dollars more. auspol RioTinto Riofail sorrynotsorry LNPfail miningfail

If it’s a sincere apology it’s ok?

How do they know it’s 46000 years old and not 45000 or 47000?

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

TOO LATE.

The real culprits here are those that allowed Rio Tinto to go ahead and legally do this in the first place.

FFS!!! fakenews RioTinto KenWyattMP Where were you Ken?

Useless words. They should never be permitted to operate in this country ever again

Not good enough. Can't get it back. They should be forced to cease mining operations in Australia immediately as a punitive measure. For too long the mining industry has destroyed the environment and heritage with this govt's blessing. auspol ShameRioTinto

lol ………...… it was a mistake lol ………. oh the 21st century

Total disgrace. An apology cannot undo what they have done. A desecration of a site with such importance archeologically and to the Indigenous owners.

The aboriginals dug the cave?

RioTinto should not be allowed to continue mining at this site. If someone cuts down a tree to “improve” their view tge tree is immediately replaced so they gain no advantage. There should be sanctions not advantage from the destruction of JuukanGorge StopRioTinto.

Reminds me of the Taliban

Too late,pathetic

Fcuking hypocrites

Rio must have Stuart Robert as an advisor

Too little, too late RioTinto

They are sorry they are getting heat for it. Nothing else.

Bit late RioTinto sorrynotsorry

Fauxpology. They could not give less of a shit.

Ruin Tinto giving China Australia’s resources for a penny.

Aren't there supposed to be Government Monitors for such expansion plans of mining companies that plan to BLOW UP THINGS and herein blow up archeological important places ?

What they’re sorry about is the backlash, and how it affects their corporate image and therefore future opportunities for profit. This destruction was YEARS in the planning and yet there was nothing within the company, or at a government level, that stopped them from doing it.

Yes, but they can’t undo it can they? Got what they wanted. Hypocrites

Ah yes, “Sorry” and its all ok. They should be criminally charged for this. How were they even allowed to do this!?

I’m reminded of my grandmother’s counsel: “It’s easier to say sorry than ask for permission.”

Oh look a 5 letter long word! Sorry. That solves all problems in the world! Ffs

Actions speak a lot more than words. Enough said.

Blow it up. Then apologize. Corporate citizenship at its best 🙄

IT IS A BIT LATE FOR THAT RioTinto

so how about some compensation payment? an apology isn't sufficient. pretty sure the number of 46k year old archeological sites is pretty low. they aren't a dime a dozen so how about pay up for the damage done to the Australian heritage destroyed by greedy corporate interests

Sorry doesn’t cut it.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Ahhh shit yeah sorry guys. It’s a shame and definitely not our intention but I guess now that we’ve blown it up the decent thing to do is mine the area

The ramifications should not be financial. No amount of money would hurt Rio or any of the major mining companies. Simply, send the CEO to jail. It just would never happen again.

I reckon Rio Tinto was taking the 'ask for forgiveness, not permission' approach here

How about a significant investment in indigenous programs to further display your regret

too fucking late

They planned to blow it up for years.....now they're sorry? WTF?

Took long enough...they must be really sorry.

apology means nothing
