'Result of cowardice': Man receives four years jail for running down fiance, leaving her for dead

A judge describes a man who ran down his fiance and mother of four, leaving her for dead after a heated argument, as cowardly and callous.

A man who ran down his fiance, leaving her for dead at a central Victorian property, has been described as cowardly and callous by a Supreme Court judge. Key points: Evans was sentenced to four years' jail with a minimum of two years, six months and before being eligible for parole The mother of four was struck by a vehicle driven by Evans and pronounced dead at the scene The judge described his failure to render assistance as"indefensible" and"the result of cowardice, callousness and selfishness" Charles McKenzie Ross Evans was sentenced to a total of four years' imprisonment and was disqualified from driving for five years. He will serve a minimum of two years and six months before being eligible for parole. Evans, 45, was initially accused of the murder of Alicia Little, 41, at a rural property near Kyneton in December 2017. The charge was downgraded after a committal hearing. He was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court today after pleading guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death, and one count of failing to render assistance after a motor vehicle accident. Episodes of violence Ms Little was struck by a vehicle driven by Evans shortly after she called triple-0 requesting police help following a heated argument during which she threatened to leave him. The mother of four suffered multiple injuries including severe blunt trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene. The court heard of a four-year relationship marked by episodes of violence. Despite this, the couple had become engaged just two weeks prior to Ms Little's death. In sentencing, Justice Lesley Taylor said she had received and considered 22 victim impact statements. "What shines from those statements is that to those nearest to her, Alicia Little was a spirited, fun-loving woman whose friends meant the world," she said. "More than one statement talks about her smile which could light a room. "A close-knit family has lost a daughter, sister, niece, aunt and mother. Friends, old and young, have lost a loved and trusted companion and a cherished non-blood aunty. "In short, the death of Alicia Little has caused wide-ranging ripples of grief. Her friends and family are devastated." Early guilty plea Justice Taylor noted that an early guilty plea by Evans had spared Ms Little's family the ordeal of a trial. "I also accept your plea of guilty indicates remorse on your part. I accept you have genuine contrition for your actions. I accept you grieve the loss of Alicia Little," she said. But Justice Taylor added that Evans's failure to render assistance when he ought reasonably to have known that his partner was seriously injured or dead was"cowardly" in the extreme. "So [too] were your untruthful statements that you had seen Ms Little alive and well on the verandah as you left, and that she had attempted suicide," Justice Taylor said. "The sentence I impose emphasises general deterrence and denounces your behaviour. "Stopping to render assistance after an accident is the decent thing to do. "Failure to do so is indefensible, as in the circumstances it can only be the result of cowardice, callousness and selfishness." Topics: Read more: ABC News
