One in six children and one in eight adults in Australia are living in poverty according to a new report by the Australian Council of Social Services and the University of New South Wales.

The report said the poverty rate in Australia was worse than it was in most other wealthy countries with low welfare rates, with a lack of affordable housing and unemployment being blamed. The report also identified a person living in poverty as anyone whose disposable income fell below a reasonable level to achieve an acceptable standard of living. The current poverty line remains at $450 per week for adults and $960 a week for two adults and two children.
