Raising Warragamba Dam wall could save thousands: NSW government modelling | rabe9

Raising the Warragamba Dam wall has the potential to save more than 8000 people from flood risk in the next two decades, according to new modelling the NSW government will use to justify the controversial project.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said raising the Warragamba Dam wall by 14 metres was the “single biggest piece of work” the government could undertake to address flooding in western Sydney. “The single largest driver of flood risk in the valley is development in the floodplain. It follows then, that one of the most effective flood risk mitigation mechanisms is the application of stronger planning controls on current and future development in the valley,” it said. “The substantial ongoing development in the floodplain since 2018 indicates a significantly higher current evacuation risk today.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature , the global authority which aims to conserve nature and push sustainable development, this year outlining its concerns about the dam’s environmental impact statement. One option could include lowering the dam’s maximum capacity by 12 metres, though Minns said the opposition had not settled on its policy.

Rabe9 Until more rain comes. 🤡

Rabe9 Are the developers going to pay the costs of the work? I bet it is the taxpayers. What about the native species plants & animals that will be destroyed. People on the flood plain will still not be able to get flood insurance!

Rabe9 Only if it encourages more housing in flood prone areas. This government never gives the real reason for spending taxpayers money.

Rabe9 brenthoare The raising of WarragambaDam is about water supply in dry periods for the additional future immigration the NSW government Dom_Perrottet plans for the purpose of growing the GDP because they have no idea how else to develop the economy tanya_plibersek AlboMP

Rabe9 Lets fix that headline. 'Raising Warragamba Dam wall would make billions for liberal backed developers using NSW peoples funds'

Rabe9 probably best to wait for a government that knows what its doing

Rabe9 Save thousands? Millions and billions! It is because of this as to why we have flood problems. The dam floods and inundates many areas.

Rabe9 alternative headline - Government has approved housing developments that risks lives of thousands

Rabe9 A very small number of people for the destruction of world heritage. Are the 8000 already at risk or will these be new residents on the flood plain?

Public transport failures will rebound on government at state electionA litany of failures and delays have put the NSW government’s public procurement policies in question. Buying into Minns’s BS about ‘forrin’ transport assets is so weak. None of the issues (and there are issues) are because things weren’t ‘made in NSW’ At least you didn’t repeat lies about trains too big for the tracks for once maybe the unions and the maintenance crew could coordinate the closing down days
