Chief Health Officer John Gerrard said the state’s Omicron-driven peak, which had likely passed on the hard-hit Gold Coast, might have less of an impact on hospital systems than expected.
“We were certainly anticipating several thousand people in hospital,” he said. “So far the impact of the epidemic is less than we expected so far in this wave.Dr Gerrard said the early hotspot of the Gold Coast was now likely “close to or past” its regional peak amid declining hospital numbers there, with more pressure to hit BrisbaneQueensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has urged parents to get their children vaccinated before the delayed start of the 2022 school year.
Anyone who had their second dose more than three months ago can now get their booster vaccine, after the state governmentA total of 89.16 per cent of the state’s 16-plus population is now fully vaccinated. While rates among the 12-15 age group are lower, at 66.61 per cent, authorities say more than a quarter of five- to 11-year-olds have had their first dose within the first two weeks they have been eligible.
