Breaking: Queen Elizabeth’s private secretary offered detailed advice to former governor-general Sir John Kerr in the weeks before he dismissed the Whitlam government

Eight days later, Sir Martin sent a letter that canvassed options for Sir John and offered an insight into the level of interest being taken by the Palace in Sir John’s search for solutions.

In a letter on November 4, Sir Martin praised Sir John’s "skill and wisdom" in his handling of the crisis and offered him further thoughts on how to handle the impasse in the Parliament."With great respect, you are playing the 'vice-regal' hand with skill and wisdom," Sir Martin wrote to Sir John on November 4.

Archives director David Fricker acknowledged the role of Professor Hocking in securing the release of the papers and said the Archives was a "pro-disclosure" organisation that had to keep the letters secret because the Federal Court had ruled they were personal, before the High Court overturned this verdict and found they were official documents.

"My role will need some careful thought, though, of course, the classic constitutional convention will presumably govern the matter."The letters from the Palace also confirm the role of Prince Charles in hearing Sir John’s concerns when the two met in Papua New Guinea in September.

Secret letters will today reveal the Queen’s role in a key moment in Australian historyProfessor Jenny Hocking recently won a campaign for the National Archives of Australia to release the so-called “palace letters” about the dismissal of Gough Whitlam in 1975. This is her account of that campaign and why the release of the letters matter. Bet its not the best letters, what did the governor general do is the question. We all know the queen is bent So looking forward to palaceletters this morning. Thank you Prof. palaceletters Whitlam was dismissed, an election was called later in the year, and the people actually sided with the decision. This was a 'Constitutional Crisis'. Chile and Argentina had a CC about the same time. It ended up with thousands of dead and military juntas. Perspective, people.

SBS seemed like a miracle, then I realised it was not a place for people who looked like meI was shocked at how comfortable this person seemed while saying those things – and that the other colleague with that person thought it was funny | OPINION Not sure if the comments were racist or a cultural reference to the caste system. You’d be surprised how ‘rudely’ the lower castes can be put in their place by their betters. As an Australian citizen of Indian origin, I relate to his experience and thank you for sharing this story. Systemic racism in Aus media is something I researched as part of my Masters at Melb Uni. We deserve better opportunities. Is it true

SBS seemed like a miracle, then I realised it was not a place for people who looked like meOpinion: I’ve struggled a great deal with whether or not this story should be told I guess the only thing we can do now is DefundSBS My favourite bit in this revealing diatribe is the presumption that white people at SBS cannot be from diverse cultural backgrounds. So, Anglos, Russians, Syrians, Italians, Germans, Greeks, Turks, Poles, Hungarians, Finns, Celts, Estonians, Gaels, and Lapps are all the “same” Oh dear ... another victim ... sob 😥
